When you’re shopping for a refrigerator, it can be difficult to find models that offer the right combination of price, performance, and reliability as well as the features you want or need. Many of Consumer Reports’ highly rated refrigerators cost a pretty penny. But if you do a little digging, you can find some great options for $1,000 or less.

In CR’s labs, we put refrigerators through their paces. After a fridge gets wired up with thermocouples, we monitor it for more than a month in a climate-controlled chamber to evaluate thermostat control and temperature uniformity. CR’s test engineers collect more than 5.4 million temperature readings for each model to detect warm and cold spots and to determine which refrigerators will keep your food fresh longer.

    More on Refrigerators

We also factor in survey data from thousands of CR members to judge brand reliability and owner satisfaction. All of that data—and then some—informs CR’s refrigerator ratings charts and each model’s Overall Score.

CR members can read on for reviews of five highly rated refrigerators in a variety of widths to fit into a kitchen. Each offers a winning combination of solid performance, value, and reliability. They’re made by Frigidaire, LG, Midea, Samsung, and Whirlpool. For even more affordable options, you can also filter our complete refrigerator ratings by price. And consult our refrigerator buying guide for advice on how to select the right type of fridge for you.

(Disclaimer: Prices fluctuate throughout the year, so depending on when you look, you might spot models here that are listed for more than $1,000.)
