Chances are, if you’re shopping for a mattress, you’re researching the pros and cons of a range of brands and models. But the truth is, where you shop for your mattress can also have an impact on your search for good sleep. After all, your choice of retailer determines whether you have a range of options to choose from, how knowledgeable the salespeople are, and how easy it is to return or exchange the mattress if you don’t like it.

That’s why the insights from Consumer Reports’ Mattress Retailers Survey can be so helpful. Our latest survey of more than 7,000 CR members who bought a new mattress between 2023 and the first quarter of 2024 has feedback about their recent mattress-buying experiences, both online and in stores.

Members dished about mattress selection, sales service, and customer support, as well as whether floor models were clean and delivery was on time. We also added ratings for web support and website usability.

Leveraging these responses, we created ratings for each of these areas for 20 retailers, including mattress-store chains (such as Mattress Firm), department stores (like Macy’s), and online platforms (such as Amazon). We also combined the survey responses for various local independent retailers to calculate ratings for those stores as a group. Each retailer was given an Overall Score too.

And we explored pricing: how much our members paid for their mattresses, how happy they were with the price, and whether they haggled—a common practice for in-store shopping but much less common with mattresses purchased online.

Based on our survey responses, members found that buying a mattress, whether online or in a store, was a satisfying experience overall. Among the CR members surveyed, 37 percent made their purchase online, a drop from 45 percent in 2020 to 2021.

In this article, we highlight some of the best-rated mattress retailers. In addition to survey details about the store, we’ve included information on a top-performing mattress from our ratings sold there. (If you’d like to try these models in a store, see our mattress buying guide for advice on how to assess a mattress.)

CR members can read about the retailers in our comprehensive mattress store ratings. They can also learn about additional mattresses offered by these sellers in our comprehensive mattress ratings, which include more than 250 models.
