Like a well-behaved dog, a reliable walk-behind lawn mower is capable and dependable, doing your bidding without fail—as long as the mower has been properly maintained. But unlike a dog, you don’t have to pick up what it leaves behind.

Consumer Reports’ exclusive survey-based reliability ratings show that several walk-behind lawn mowers brands are trustworthy tools, year after year. But a few, like that canine output, kinda stink.

To help consumers avoid the clunkers, Consumer Reports experts surveyed tens of thousands of CR members to find out which mower brands had the most problems, and what those problems were.

“Data from our member surveys provides an important complement to the data from our lab tests by giving us the real-world experiences that CR’s members have with their lawn mowers over several years of use,” says Martin Lachter, the research program leader who manages mower surveys.

Why You Can Trust Consumer Reports Reliability Ratings

Our most recent survey collected feedback from CR members about 30,768 walk-behind mowers purchased between 2012 and 2022. That tally covers experiences with 21,151 gas mowers and 9,617 electric units.

To determine predicted reliability, we survey our members about the products they own and use the results to make projections about how new models from a given brand will hold up over time. Models from brands that rate near or at the bottom for predicted reliability aren’t eligible to be recommended by CR no matter how well they cut in our performance tests.

We also ask members how likely they are to recommend their mower to friends or family, and that question serves as the basis for our owner satisfaction ratings.

Those ratings factor into each model’s Overall Score, along with performance ratings based on our exhaustive mower field tests.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the winners and losers. The results cover brands including Cub Cadet, Ego, Greenworks, Honda, Kobalt, Stihl, and Troy-Bilt. For our reliability results on riding mowers, check out our guide to the most and least reliable gas riding mower brands.
