Electric lawn mowers are by design eco-friendly and better for living things than gas-powered mowers. Among other benefits, they don’t directly emit noxious gases that contribute to air pollution, health issues, and global warming.

But even among electric lawn mowers and riders, some are created more eco-friendly than others. Those that are more beneficial to the environment use their power more efficiently, which in turn conserves electricity. That’s a plus for the environment and to a small degree, your wallet. So Consumer Reports created a new Green Choice label—a simple green leaf—to help you find those eco-friendly models in our battery lawn mower ratings.

“We’re using our exclusive data to give consumers an idea of which battery mowers in our ratings use their energy most efficiently," says Shanika Whitehurst, Consumer Reports’ associate director of product sustainability, research, and testing.

How Lawn Mowers Earn Consumer Reports' Green Choice Label

Consumer Reports uses several criteria to determine which electric walk-behind mowers and riding mowers qualify for its Green Choice designation. We not only take the efficiency of the batteries themselves into account but also look at the mowers’ designs and features for elements that lead to less energy consumption or more environmentally friendly yard maintenance. Here are some of the factors we consider:

More on Sustainability and Green Choice

Battery power: Batteries that can produce more energy can help a mower do its job more capably without having to recharge as often. "Having batteries as a concentrated energy source that can store a charge faster and work more efficiently is a win-win," Whitehurst says. "What we found in our analysis is, batteries are not all alike."

Number of batteries used: Our scoring favors mowers that require fewer batteries to do their work. The manufacture of batteries is itself an energy-intensive activity. So a mower that needs a single battery to do its work is more eco-friendly than a comparable model that requires multiple batteries, Whitehurst says.

Cut and charge time: The longer a mower can run on one charge—the "cut time"—the more energy efficient it is, in our book. And the shorter the time that’s required to charge the battery, the less electricity it uses. We consider mowers that charge up quickly and then mow for a long time on that one charge to be more efficient.

Mower design and features: Wider decks can cut more lawn on one pass, which means using less battery power. The ability to mulch lets users leave clippings on the lawn to decompose, a more eco-friendly way to fertilize. Washout ports that enable owners to hose out stuck clippings and debris extend the operation and maintenance of the mower. And longer warranties mean owners are more likely to get their mowers repaired rather than scrapping them for something new.

Do Electric Mowers Add to Greenhouse Gas Emissions?

Electric lawn mowers do contribute to greenhouse gas emissions—indirectly. That’s because the electricity used to recharge those batteries may very well have been produced by a utility that consumes fossil fuels and produces greenhouse gases to generate and transmit its power. Plus, there’s the energy involved in producing the batteries—and the mowers themselves.

To be sure, an electric mower’s indirect emissions are a fraction of what gas tools produce. But consumers of electric mowers still can have a greater positive impact on the environment by choosing an energy-efficient, CR Green Choice mower. "Through reducing electricity use, we reduce associated greenhouse gas emissions," Whitehurst says.

"We may be very far off from renewable energy sources providing the amount of electricity needed to completely support the grid," Whitehurst says. "Until we get there . . . these newer technologies that allow us to harness energy in new efficient ways can sustain us for right now."

You can further reduce your carbon footprint from using electric power tools if some of your home’s electricity comes from solar panels, or your utility depends on hydropower, solar, wind, or another form of renewable energy to create your electricity.

And you can extend the life of your battery by storing it properly in the off-season—in particular, keeping it in its charger, inside and away from extreme cold. Follow the maker’s manual for more tips.

    Most Eco-Friendly Electric Push Mowers

Consumer Reports’ ratings include three electric push mowers that meet our strict criteria for a Green Choice designation. One of those also is a CR Smart Buy, making it a green choice that also saves you green.

    Most Eco-Friendly Electric Self-Propelled Mowers

Ten self-propelled electric walk-behind mowers earn Consumer Reports’ Green Choice designation, and most are at or near the top of our ratings for this mower type. We’ve included two of those top-rated models, plus a capable model that’s also a CR Smart Buy.

    Most Eco-Friendly Electric Riding Mower

Only one of the eight electric riding mowers in our ratings qualifies for the Green Choice designation. Because electric riding mowers are relatively new to the market, CR does not yet provide survey-based reliability ratings for this category.
