Talking Cars 430: Driving the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse
We take Ford’s redesigned 500-hp muscle car to the streets and the track
Main theme: This week our panel gives their first impressions of the redesigned 2024 Ford Mustang. This long-serving pony car is entering its seventh generation, with a reshaped body, reworked driver’s instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen, more power across the engine line, and additional active safety and driver assistance features. We rented two 2024 Mustangs from Ford: a turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost coupe and the new Dark Horse model with a 500-hp V8. Rubber was laid down, corners were strafed, and we let that mighty V8 pony run. Then we got somber for a moment, as our panel contemplated whether this will be the final V8-powered muscle car out of Detroit.
Audience Questions
• How does Mazda’s cylinder-deactivation technology work on its four-cylinder engines? And what have you seen so far about the reliability of these engines?
• I have a 180-mile daily commute, and I’m looking for a new car to replace my 2014 Mazda CX-5. I’m thinking about a Toyota Camry or RAV4 Hybrid, but should I also be looking at an electric vehicle?
