Talking Cars 390: Driving the 2023 BMW X1

Plus, we answer a question about ways to avoid dealer markups and help a viewer choose a fuel-efficient family car

Main theme: This week we give our first impressions of the redesigned 2023 BMW X1. This entry-level luxury compact SUV is slightly larger than the outgoing model, and it delivers more power from its turbocharged four-cylinder engine. We like that it now includes some key active safety equipment that previously wasn’t available at all, including blind spot warning, rear cross traffic warning, and reverse automatic emergency braking. We also discuss the usefulness of the X1’s cabin when it comes to hauling a family, debate the intuitiveness of the reworked touchscreen-based infotainment system, and consider whether the new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission helps, or hinders, the X1’s overall driving experience.

    Audience questions:

    • Is there a way to order directly from an automaker so that I can avoid the ridiculous, over-MSRP markups some dealers are charging these days?
    • Can you help me choose a family car that delivers a good value proposition, in terms of both reliability and fuel economy? I’d prefer a sedan rather than an SUV, and I’d love a wagon!
