Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX Are Recalled Due to Curtain Airbag Concerns

The automakers have issued a stop-sale order for the SUVs in dealer inventory until they can be fixed

Toyota is recalling 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX SUVs due to concerns that the driver’s side curtain airbag may not deploy as intended if the side window is down because a portion of the curtain may unfurl outside of the vehicle. Consequently, the SUVs are out of compliance with federal regulations and may not provide the intended protection in a side impact.

    more on recalls

Toyota is currently developing a fix for this problem, which affects more than 145,000 SUVs. Until a repair is available, the company has a stop-sale order in place that prevents dealerships from selling Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX SUVs in inventory. Further, production has been suspended.

In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automaker advises that “other Toyota and Lexus vehicles are not equipped with the same curtain shield airbag and do not have the same structure and components surrounding the airbag during deployment.” But it will investigate if there are similar concerns with the regular Highlander, although it uses different components.

Owners will be notified of the recall in August 2024. If a repair isn’t available at that time, a subsequent notification will be mailed.

Important: Until the remedy is performed, Toyota recommends that customers keep their driver side window closed while driving.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
