Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram Vehicles Recalled Because Backup Camera May Fail

Chrysler is recalling 1,033,433 minivans, SUVs, and trucks from the 2021 to 2023 model years because radio software may prevent the rearview image from displaying on the center screen when in Reverse. This is a safety risk when backing up, and it means that these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”

The recalled vehicles are certain 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica minivans; 2021-2022 Dodge Durango SUVs; 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs; 2022-2023 Jeep Compass, Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer SUVs; 2022 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 pickup trucks; and 2022-2023 Ram Promaster vans.

The driver won’t receive a warning that the problem exists. Instead, there will be no image displayed when in Reverse if the vehicle has a failure, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Drivers experiencing this problem are cautioned to backup with care, especially because these large vehicles have a significant blind zone behind them without a camera.

The fix is a software update. Owners will be notified by mail in early August 2024.
