Have sleek French-door refrigerators been catching your eye in the appliance aisle? If so, you’re in good company. These stylish models have become the go-to configuration for consumers looking to upgrade. They’re generally bigger, with more cubic feet of usable space, and come loaded with more features than most top-freezer or bottom-freezer refrigerators.

French-door refrigerators commonly have an icemaker, digital controls, spillproof shelves, gallon-sized bins on the doors, and other convenient features. It’s no surprise that CR’s latest member survey reveals that French-door refrigerators account for more than half of new refrigerators bought by members; no other refrigerator configuration comes close. (Side-by-side refrigerators get the next largest share, at only 16 percent.)

    More on Refrigerators

Despite their popularity, French-door refrigerators as a group are not very reliable. Except for the high-end brand Fisher & Paykel, most French-door brands received a middling or worse score for predicted reliability in our latest member survey. Those results also reveal that Kenmore and LG French-doors are more prone to having compressors that break or are faulty than competing brands. Despite these issues, you will see many LG French-doors at the top of our ratings, and our members still report them to be more reliable than many other brands in our survey.

If reliability is your top priority, you’ll want to consider a top-freezer or bottom-freezer instead. But if you’re after the French-door style and feature set, plenty of options offer good day-to-day performance. Below, we review the top French-door refrigerators in three standard widths. CR members can read ratings and reviews of each model.

For even more options, check out our comprehensive refrigerator ratings of over 250 models. And if you’re not sure where to start with refrigerator shopping, see our in-depth refrigerator buying guide.

    Best 30-Inch-Wide French-Door Refrigerators

Our refrigerator recommendations are organized by width. We recommend that you measure the space where you plan to put your refrigerator before you begin shopping. The narrowest French-door models are around 30 inches wide.

    Best 33-Inch-Wide French-Door Refrigerators

There are relatively few 33-inch French-door refrigerators on the market, but some kitchens simply can’t fit a full-sized refrigerator. The best models in our ratings operate more efficiently than 30-inch French-door fridges, and they get you much more storage space: as much as 25 cubic feet compared with 22 cubic feet for the roomiest 30-inch models.

    Best 36-Inch-Wide French-Door Refrigerators

These refrigerators score higher overall in our ratings, thanks in part to their larger capacities—up to 29 cubic feet—which helps them be more energy-efficient.

    How CR Tests Refrigerators

During testing, we outfit each refrigerator with thermocouples in a climate-controlled chamber and monitor it for more than a month, collecting more than 5.4 million temperature readings that identify warm and cold spots, to determine which models will keep your food fresh longest. We also factor in survey data from thousands of CR members to judge brand reliability and satisfaction. All of that—and then some—informs CR’s refrigerator ratings and each model’s Overall Score.
