    Most Reliable Heat Pump Brands

The best ones will keep you cool (or, when needed, warm) all year long

Heat pumps can be one of the most efficient ways to cool or heat your home. That’s because they simply move air from one place to another, depending on the season, rather than generate hot or cold air. During the winter, a heat pump pulls heat from the outdoor air into your home. During the summer, it pulls hot air from your home and expels it outdoors.

Depending on factors like where you live and the cost of electricity, a heat pump might also save you money compared with other heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems.

    More on Heat Pumps

Because you’re likely to use your heat pump year-round, you’ll want one from a brand with a reliable track record. That’s why we asked about 10,000 of our members about their experiences with heat pumps installed between 2007 and 2023 and used to heat and cool their homes.

Based on our analysis, we determined that, on average, about half of heat pumps are likely to experience problems by the end of the eighth year of ownership, which is about the midpoint of the expected life of the system. This makes heat pumps one of the least reliable products we analyze, so identifying which brands make the most reliable heat pumps is critical.

CR explains how buying a heat pump for your home could get you thousands of dollars in federal tax credits and state rebates.

We analyzed data from our members on 29 brands of heat pumps to find winners and losers, from well-known companies such as Trane and Carrier to smaller, lesser-known companies such as Heil and Payne. Thirteen brands earned favorable marks for predicted reliability, which estimates how likely a heat pump is to experience problems by the eighth year of ownership.
