Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Visit americanexpress.com to learn more.

Even if you only fly a few times a year, the hassle of waiting in airport security or customs lines is enough to justify signing up for TSA PreCheck® and Global Entry. These two U.S. government programs are designed to minimize the time spent waiting in queues, which is a pretty nice travel perk.

These programs aren't free, but some travel credit cards will reimburse your application fees. The Global Entry application fee is normally $100 ($120 starting Oct. 1, 2024) and TSA PreCheck costs at least $78. Global Entry is more expensive, but it includes TSA PreCheck benefits. Once you're approved, these memberships are valid for five years.

If you're considering applying for these trusted traveler programs, CNBC Select has rounded up the top travel credit cards that offer Global Entry and/or TSA PreCheck credit.

FAQs

When you have a Global Entry membership, you also receive TSA PreCheck benefits and can use the TSA PreCheck security lines at the airport.

Global Entry provides members with expedited customs upon reentry from outside of the U.S. and it also includes TSA PreCheck. TSA PreCheck allows members to use dedicated PreCheck expedited security lanes at the airport, but does not include Global Entry perks.

Getting approved for Global Entry is typically more complicated than enrolling in TSA PreCheck. With Global Entry you apply and once you're conditionally approved, you need to schedule an interview to complete the application process.

Bottom line

Many travel credit cards reimburse your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee, and you don't need to shell out a large annual fee to get this benefit. It's generally recommended that you apply for Global Entry rather than TSA PreCheck as it includes all PreCheck benefits and would still be covered by your card's credit.

Why trust CNBC Select?

At CNBC Select, our mission is to provide our readers with high-quality service journalism and comprehensive consumer advice so they can make informed decisions with their money. Every credit card review is based on rigorous reporting by our team of expert writers and editors with extensive knowledge of credit card products. While CNBC Select earns a commission from affiliate partners on many offers and links, we create all our content without input from our commercial team or any outside third parties, and we pride ourselves on our journalistic standards and ethics. See our methodology for more information on how we choose the best travel credit cards for Global Entry and TSA PreCheck credits.

Our methodology

To determine which cards offer the best benefits for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, CNBC Select analyzed over 250 major credit cards issued through FDIC-insured banks and NCUA-insured credit unions that are widely available in the U.S. We focused only on cards that offer application fee credits for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

We compared each card on a range of features, including rewards (e.g., cash back, points and miles), annual fees, welcome bonuses, introductory and standard APR and balance transfer fees and foreign transaction fees. We also considered additional perks (e.g., ongoing travel or merchant statement credits), cardholder protections (e.g., purchase protection, $0 liability protection and travel insurance), the application process when available (e.g., is there a credit pull or required credit score) and how easy it is to redeem points (e.g., are rewards are tied to a specific brand; if transferable, to how many/which partners, can you redeem for straight cash back).

We also considered CNBC Select audience data when available, such as general demographics and engagement with our content and tools.

For the cards that offered a rewards program, we considered consumer spending data forecasts from location intelligence firm Esri to determine where U.S. consumers are spending the most money, like on dining and travel. We used this to help determine what bonus categories are most useful for consumers. Since the value of a point or mile varies based on what they can be redeemed for, we also considered things like transferability and the ability to redeem for cash-back.
