Top 5 things to watch in the stock market Friday, including big jobs report

Top things to watch Friday, July 5

  1. Stocks were mixed slightly Friday following another record S&P 500 close Wednesday as Treasury yields dipped further on an uptick in the unemployment rate. U.S. markets were closed Thursday for the July 4th holiday.
  2. The June employment report on Friday morning came in slightly better than expected with the economy adding 206,000 nonfarm jobs versus 200,000 expected. However, April and May were revised lower by 111,000. The June unemployment rate ticked up to 4.1% from 4% last month. Average hourly earnings were in line with expectations, up 3.9% year over year but lower from 4.1% in the prior month.
  3. Several analysts came to the defense of Club name Constellation Brands after the beer powerhouse fell more than 3% on earnings Wednesday. JPMorgan raised its price target to $320 per share from $291 after a strong June. The analysts called the bear case in Constellation's Wine & Spirits business and election risk (tariffs/immigration) overdone. Shares gained nearly 1% on Friday.
  4. Novo Nordisk and Club name Eli Lilly fell Wednesday after a study suggested the use of Novo's GLP-1 semaglutide increased the risk of a rare eye condition. Jefferies analyst calls the study "noise." The stocks bounced Friday.
  5. Samsung Electronics hits a 3-year high in overseas markets after earnings beat and better than expected guidance, driven by artificial intelligence.
