Tropical storm Beryl

Tropical storm Beryl continues to work into the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday Morning.

The storm is forecast to continue to work Northeast over the next few days and begin to strengthen. The official forecast has the storm making landfall somewhere around Victoria, Texas and then working inland. This would bring storm surge and heavy rainfall along with the winds to the Texas Coastline.

Current forecasts show that the storm could be a strong Category 1 Hurricane by the time it reaches landfall. Hurricane Watches and Storm Surge Watches are in effect from The Mouth of the Rio Grance (US/Mexico Border) to San Luis Pass, Texas.

Key Messages from the National Hurricane Center about Tropical Storm Beryl:

1. There is an increasing risk of damaging hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge in portions of northeastern Mexico and the lower and middle Texas Coast late Sunday and Monday, where Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches are in effect. Additional watches and warnings may be required on Saturday. Interests in these areas should follow any advice given by local officials.

2. Flash and urban flooding are possible across portions of the Texas Gulf Coast and eastern Texas from Sunday through the middle of next week.

3. Rip currents will cause life-threatening beach conditions through the weekend across much of the Gulf Coast. Beachgoers should heed warning flags and the advice of lifeguards and local officials before venturing into the water.

Back at home for Metro Detroit, widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected on Tuesday, and the cloud cover along with the rain will help keep the temperatures down. High temperatures only in the lower 80s by Tuesday afternoon.

As of right now, we are keeping the forecast dry into the second half of next week, but we will need to see what the data shows regarding what will be Hurricane Beryl, and what impacts that may have on our forecast by the end of next week. The data is not in agreement as of right now, so we will continue to track that.

Expect a mixture of sunshine and clouds for Wednesday and Thursday, leading to more sunshine than anything on Friday. High temperature is very close to average, expect temperatures into the low to mid 80s from Wednesday all the way through Friday.
