Actively Advancing Sustainable Metals Production: A Look into the Boston Metal do Brasil Inauguration

Features Published: April 10, 2024

In March, Boston Metal celebrated the inauguration of our Brazilian Subsidiary, Boston Metal do Brasil, marking the first commercial deployment of our Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology platform for our high-value metals business. This represents a major milestone for Boston Metal’s technology and operations as we work toward commercializing MOE for green steel.

The Boston Metal team celebrated the emergence of our new industrial plant surrounded by stakeholders and other special guests, including the governor of the state of Minas Gerais and local authorities. Our esteemed Board of Directors—Irina Gorbounova (ArcelorMittal), Chris Poirier (Breakthrough Energy Ventures), Rick Cutright (Climate Investment – OGCI), Katie Rae (Engine Ventures), Shyam Kamadolli (Fine Structure Ventures), Ingo Wender (MoltenOx) and Mark Cupta (Prelude Ventures)—made the most of their time in Brazil by holding a productive in-person board meeting and touring the facility the day prior to the inaugural event.

“We are incredibly proud to share this commercial milestone with our investors, partners and employees. We especially appreciate our Board of Directors who made the long trip to be with us for this event and to see firsthand the work we are doing here. In Brazil, you can now see our MOE technology in action—producing valuable metals and revenue while on our path to producing green steel.”

“I think it’s important for our stakeholders to understand the progress we’ve made over the last year and how it’s leading us to the next steps in transforming the future of metallurgical production,” added Itamar Resende, president of Boston Metal do Brasil.

We want to acknowledge that this commercial milestone would not have been possible without our stakeholders and investors who believe in our mission. With their support, we were able to rapidly bring our vision to life and build this first facility in record time. In turn, they had the opportunity to witness metal tapping from the MOE cell, and just as important, they saw the dedication and expertise of our hardworking team payoff. The excitement was palpable as they observed our custom-built facility and cutting-edge technology that will transform how metals are made.

“Seeing the plant is kind of seeing our dream come true. What they’ve been able to build is such a wonderful culture, very community oriented. And [they’re] doing something that no one else has done before.”

This progress is just the beginning. We are leveraging our technology and expanding our operations in Brazil as we work toward our mission to decarbonize steelmaking and advance efficient, sustainable metals production.
