Three boys arrested over the stabbing of a transgender woman have been bailed.

The victim had to undergo surgery for a "deep wound" to her leg after she was attacked in what police are treating as a hate crime.

The boys, aged 12, 14 and 16, were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and have now been released on "strict conditional bail" while Cleveland Police continues investigating.

A spokeswoman for the force said officers have stepped up their presence in the Norton Road area of Stockton following the assault last Tuesday.

She said neighbourhood officers are "linking in with the community to provide reassurance" as she urged anyone with concerns to speak to them.

The boys were arrested after armed response units were called to the area.

The victim, who is in her 20s, is being supported by her family and police.

In the wake of the attack, Assistant Chief Constable Richard Baker said: "Nobody should ever have to fear being targeted for simply being who they are.

"Physical violence against a person, or slurs made regarding a person’s gender identity, race, disability or any other difference, is not acceptable and will not be tolerated in our communities."
