Used AWD/4WD Vehicles for Sale

If you live in a climate where it rains or snows a lot, you'll probably want an all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle. Some used car shoppers may think all-wheel drive is the same as 4-wheel-drive. We’re here to set the record straight. First off, AWD and 4WD aren’t the same thing.

A 4WD (sometimes written as 4x4) system is most commonly found in larger trucks or an off-road SUV such as the Chevrolet Colorado. These 4WD systems usually allow the vehicle to switch between two-wheel drive (2WD) while driving on pavement and then to 4WD for slippery, off-road terrains. When the vehicle is in 4WD mode, the front and rear axles lock together resulting in all four wheels rotating at the same speed providing maximum traction between the terrain's surface and the tires. More complex 4WD systems, like those found in Jeeps, use electronic sensors that can independently detect and alternate power based on which tire is experiencing slippage. 4WD vehicles are ideal for off-road and for hauling and towing. Engaging your 4WD system while on city streets could cause damage to your driveline. However, some truck or SUV buyers may have a choice of AWD or 4WD.

AWD is often found in most SUVs and some minivans and commercial vans, like the Toyota Sienna and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van where most the vehicle's power is first sent to the front-wheels and then programmatically sent on-demand to the rear-wheels as needed. The driver doesn't need to do anything in a AWD vehicle and the system operates without the driver's input. Some AWD vehicles may have a "winter" or "snow" setting to help with wintry conditions. AWD systems are simple but these vehicles are not ideal for hauling and towing.
