Apple CarPlay, similar to Android Auto, makes your car’s touchscreen become an extension of your iPhone by allowing you to make phone calls, send text messages via voice commands, play music, view detailed turn-by-turn map directions, and more. While CarPlay is not a duplicate, mirror version of your iPhone’s screen, many of your most used apps will be accessible on the vehicle touchscreen. Example of these apps include Apple Music, Apple Maps, Audiobooks, Calendar, Messages, Podcasts, Spotify, Google Maps, Waze, WhatsApp, Zoom, and many others. Most importantly, CarPlay allows simultaneous use of these mobile apps without requiring the driver to look down or touch their iPhone. The earliest vehicles featuring Apple CarPlay will be 2014 or 2015 model years and as long as you have an iPhone 5 or newer, running iOS 7.1 or later, your vehicle will support it. As of 2023, almost every large auto manufacturer includes Apple CarPlay as a standard or optional feature with Tesla being the most notable exception. Why? Tesla cars use their own proprietary software. Some OEMs are now producing updated head units that support Apple CarPlay and can be retrofitted into older, pre-Carplay compatible vehicles allowing even old cars to have CarPlay. Even after-market stereos such as Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood, and Pioneer all support Apple CarPlay. Prior to 2021, the connection between your vehicle and the iPhone was hard-wired but since then, more vehicles use a wireless connection.
