Editorial Reviews

Review

"This addition to the long-running Basher Science series introduces concepts in engineering, visually represented by chunky, anime-style figures. Divided into seven color-coded categories, the book introduces members of the “Mechanical Mob” (which include Ramp, Lever, and Pump), “Design Dynamos” such as Ergonomics and Artificial Intelligence (“I’m still relatively young, and my first real job is to suggest products and ads you might like on the Internet”), and dozens of other tangible and intangible concepts, structures, and devices. The upbeat, first-person narratives and quirky art create an inviting way for children to learn about the breadth of what engineering can mean. Ages 10–14.(Jan.)" -- Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Artist and designer Simon Basher has fun playing in the world of contemporary character design. Inspired by a love of simple line work and a rich color palette, his characters fill the gap between edgy manga and the cuteness of Hello Kitty. He lives in England.

Tom Jackson is a science writer based in Bristol, UK. Tom specialises in recasting science and technology into lively historical narratives. After almost 20 years of writing, Tom has uncovered a wealth of stories that help to bring technical content alive and create new ways of enjoying learning about science. In his time, Tom has been a zoo keeper, travel writer, buffalo catcher and filing clerk, but he now writes for adults and children, for books, magazines and TV.

An Insightful & Thoroughly Unique Learning Series
We have purchased several of these books for our daughter as additional reinforcement to concepts she's learning about as a Homeschooler. As a child author herself, she appreciates books that are exceptionally unique in their approach to teaching a particular concept. The Engineering book and Basher's Periodic Table are her favorites so far. The books are presented in such a whimsical, quirky manner and she loves to share the insights from what she's learned. Something about the Basher series feels like he's hit the mark when it comes to creating thoroughly enjoyable informational texts on learning new advanced concepts, broken down into the primary, essential and fundamental basics. Bravo!

My son is a voracious reader. We got him 7 of the Basher Science books for his 8th birthday in late March. He had finished them all by the end of April and has picked them back up again to reread. (2nd grade, reading at a U-level) He won't touch a fiction book unless forced, but if it is about science or technology he can't put it down. Just enough pictures to keep him from feeling intimidated by the text, perfect silliness level to keep him engaged, and more real science facts than he could absorb the first time through.

Not quite what I was expecting. The book gives descriptions of bridges, skyscrapers, tools, etc. Not a lot of details of how things actually work. Entertaining nonetheless.

My 6yo son borrowed this boom from the library over and over! So we brought a copy for him to keep. The pictures are really nice and the words are easy to read and understand for children. My son will choose a page/item from the book and he and his dad will go out and about finding things that use the material or power. The other books in the series are just as good and would recommend for any curious 6+ child
