Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-8–Two new titles follow the format of Green and Basher's Physics and Biology (both Kingfisher, 2008) and other visually appealing introductions to the sciences. Chemistry begins with a short overview of the discipline and information on Antoine Lavoisier's 18th-century scientific findings. Concepts are grouped by associations: “Basic States” (solid, liquid, etc.), “Nuts and Bolts” (atom, ion, etc.), “Nasty Boys” (acid, base, etc.), and more. The individual concepts are each introduced over a spread that features a computer-generated cartoon of a character representing the idea and a brief introduction to its characteristics and personality. Math follows a similar format, but without an introduction. Chapters include, among others: “Number Bunch” (zero, infinity, etc.), “Special Sum-Things” (add, subtract, etc.), and “Shape Shifters” (line, angle, etc.). In both books, the information is presented in a chatty, first-person voice. For example, “Acid” announces: “The most notorious of the Nasty Boys. I'm mad, bad, and thoroughly dangerous to know. Given the chance, I'll eat away at Metal and burn through your skin!” Other basic facts are provided in bullet points and small boxed areas. Thee worthwhile library purchases would make handy curriculum supplements.–Maren Ostergard, King County Library System, Issaquah, WAα(c) Copyright 2010. From Booklist

This nicely designed paperback from the Basher Books series introduces basic mathematical terms such as zero, line, pi, quadrilaterals, ratio, bar graph, and x (representing unknown quantities). Each one, personified in the accompanying digital illustration, speaks for itself. Subtract begins, “People often think I’m gloomy. Okay, I admit it, I’m the exact opposite of Add, that bubbly ball of smirking positivity. Later Subtract touches on subtracting negative numbers and offers a mental-math puzzler with an alternate method of reaching the solution. Reminiscent of Japanese cartoons, the colorful, iconic illustrations of the characters are appealing enough to disarm many mathphobic students, while those who love the subject will be in their element. The accompanying poster can be easily detached from the back cover. Appealing to a broad range of readers, this little book introduces plenty of ideas to build on while presenting familiar concepts in a fresh way. Grades 4-7. --Carolyn Phelan

I believe we have every book Basher's written, and this one is absolutely one of the favorites. I am amazed at my daughter sitting and spending long hours reading and giggling over a book about math, but I'm even more amazed at how she's been able to internalize concepts, like negative numbers, which normally wouldn't even be touched on for many years. I'm hoping that Algebra will make an appearance soon!

Ok, I bought this for my 3 year old daughter. It IS a little over her head, but not by all that much. Out of the 3 Basher books that I own, this one is the most easy and down-to-earth for small minds to understand. Either that, or I have more of a background in math than I do chemistry and astronomy. Either way, she enjoys listening to all of them! I would definitely recommend these! They are not a text book, but rather a nice little addition to an already-implemented lifelong curriculum.

I bought this book for my 9 year-old son who first got hooked on this series from the book called "The Elements." I would recommend any and all of the books in this series. They have fun pictures that reinforce the learning and provide a lot of very interesting information. If you never thought your child would be excited to read a book about math, try this one!

My kids 6 and 8 really enjoy this book. It's a bit easy for my 8 year old but he reads it to his brother and I think that helps reenforce concepts. My 6 year old just adores how each concept is taught as a character. He especially loves Zero, Infinity, and Pi. I know he doesn't get all the concepts and he can only listen to a couple pages at a time, but it definitely has its place on his reading list and he requests a page or two often. We have a couple other of the books in the series: Periodic Table and Chemistry and they are equally loved.

we found our 1st Basher book in Ho Chi Minh City airport 2 years ago & bought it for our son to take on holiday. Boy, he loved it so much we have bought almost every other book ever written in the series because not only does he love them, but also his little sister! They are now 8 & 10 years old and have so much fun while they learn...we thoroughly recommend all of these great little books.

I read parts of this to get my advanced 5th grade math class thinking. They enjoy it. The Basher Books all personify various topics to make reading about them fun and interesting to students. Usually they are geared for students older than 5th grade, but my kids this year like them.

I first bought the Periodic Table of Elements book by the same authors and my grandson loved it. I've since added five more titles to our collection (this is one of them) and he has enjoyed every one. Eventually I'll have the entire series - they make great "bribes" or rewards when I'm asking a little extra from him.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit difficult for kids to read
Reviewed in Japan on May 29, 2017
I love this series and I have read many of this series.

However, this Math version would be difficult for kids to understand because it omits explanations too many times.

It introduces the words such as rhombuses and parallelograms, but the book just says they are wacky.
