The first biography of rapper Mac Miller, the Pittsburgh cult favorite–turned–rap superstar who touched the lives of millions before tragically passing away at the age of twenty-six

“Most Dope works as a reminder of Mac’s passion for hip-hop and his gifts as a MC. But the new book from music journalist Paul Cantor absolutely soars as a cautionary tale about drug addiction.” —Esquire

Malcolm James McCormick was born on January 19, 1992. He began making music at a young age and by 15 was already releasing mixtapes. One of the first true viral superstars, his early records earned him a rabid legion of die-hard fans—as well as a few noteworthy detractors. But despite his undeniable success, Miller was plagued by struggles with substance abuse and depression, both of which fueled his raw and genre-defying music yet ultimately led to his demise.

Through detailed reporting and interviews with dozens of Miller’s confidants, Paul Cantor brings you to leafy Pittsburgh, seductive Los Angeles, and frenzied New York, where you will meet Miller’s collaborators, producers, business partners, best friends, and even his roommates. Traveling deep into Miller’s inner circle, behind the curtain, the velvet ropes, and studio doors, this is the story of a passionate, gifted young man who achieved his life’s ambition, only to be undone by his personal demons.

Most Dope is part love letter, part cautionary tale, never shying away from the raw, visceral way Mac Miller lived his life.

As a fan of Mac Miller and an avid reader this has been an extraordinary read & well worth it. I purchased both books the one endorsed by mac’s family & this one. And the read by Paul C. 100 percent throws the other book out. This was so well researched & written. I didn’t want to put it down! I recommend 100 percent. He did not deserve the hate he got for this, the amount of time, effort, & research it must have took to write this book astounds me. If you want to pick one, id say this. It saddens me that Mac’s family would send hate too this author simply because they weren’t making profit off this book. I would also like to mention that Paul states at the beginning of this book that he was not working with Mac’s family. So there was no hidden agenda or anything, just a well written book.

The 1 star reviews of this book from people who never read it, are undeserved. As a true fan of Mac, I wanted to read about his life and career, not how his music affected an author. Dozens upon dozens of his day ones and musical collaborators went on the record to contribute to this well researched book. They offer true & honest first hand experiences of being part of the inner circle. Other information is taken from interviews, all painstakingly cited throughout.

For me, the most interesting revelation in the book was finding out Mac's first girlfriend was the one who ended their relationship for good in June of 2016. Shocking, since she angrily implied on her blog for 2 years that it was the other way around.

However, the main focus of the book is what an outstanding human, son, friend and brother Mac was. How he always confronted his detractors and critics with kindness and grace, winning them over with charm instead of revenge. I'm sure much more was shared with the author that he chose not to publish, out of an abundance of respect for Mac and his family.

If you want facts about Mac and his legacy, this is the book for you. If you want to cling to the hive mindset that some of his fans have invented since his passing, then I suppose the other book would be your best choice.

PLEASE READ. Before you see these other comments rating this book a 1 star because “Paul wasn’t authorized by malcoms family” this big is well researched, you can tell he supported Mac. Only reason Macs family didn’t want this book to come out is because… money. You know how many fan made documentary’s have been created? But they don’t care about that because they don’t have one coming out soon. They obviously want the money, no one likes to share. It’s gross. If you wanna read a book about macs impact on someone, read donnas book. If you want to read a biography about Mac Miller, read this book. I don’t know what makes Donna so special and why she even wrote a book in the first place. Mac wouldn’t have cared for this crap I can’t see it any other way. So spread the art and words or Mac and continue to appreciate the fact he gifted us all with such a beautiful live. Forget about these material things. You can’t expect Mac art to seep through these books. Cause nothing about it is from Mac other than quotes from him. Most dope!

This book was such an engrossing page turner, I couldn’t put it down. Cantor really takes us through the Macs journey…I felt like for a moment, I was a fly on the wall in his beautiful life. Contrary to what I saw before reading, he actually spoke to many of Mac’s close personal friends, and it’s clear just how much they loved him and how cathartic it was to tell their parts of the story. What’s more, the way the book is written, it’s a transcendent story….which makes it apparent that Mac was bigger than himself, bigger than hip hop or music, he was exponentially more special than that, and for this, his legacy will live on. Thank you for a satisfying take on his life. Highly reccomend.

The “approved” book by the Miller estate was more or less a attention grabbing diary of the author’s personal anecdotal experience with Mac’s music.

This book is a much better experience for those wanting to actually dive into the life and experiences of Mac Miller. I strongly recommend you give this book it’s fair shot and not listen to the review bombers. Cheers.

Could not put this one down. I’ve been on a reading binge lately, the last 3 books I’ve read have been Bio’s and this one was easily the best. Extremely well-done. I only wish there would’ve been more details from 2013-onward, it seems like the majority of the book is Mac’s early years and there is a lot of detail there. Regardless, this is a great book. Paul Cantor does an excellent job, you can tell it was very well-researched. I wish I could erase the book from my memory and read it again for the first time. It’s that good.

I was waiting for something, and I’ve read a couple books about Mac’s life and none were this good. Well written, detailed, the author did his research. Beautiful portrait of macs life and his music/rise to fame. It also just solidifies the fact that Mac was such a humble, kind, lovable human. Even if you aren’t a Mac fan, if you’re just a music fan, def check out this book. Though you’ll be a Mac Miller fan after, that’s for sure.

Most Dope. 92' til infinity

It was a good read. Curious about the life of Malcolm James McCormick many of my questions were answered through this book. I wish it was longer and went deeper into the artist's psyche but I recommend this book to any Mac Miller fan who would like to know more about him. It helps understand more about him and his surroundings and how he became the artist he was.
