Works for Streaming PlayStation 1 Games with Elgato Game Capture HD

My son purchased this converter in order to stream PlayStation 1 games from his PlayStation 2 (it's backwards compatible) via his Elgato Game Capture HD capture card. The issue was that the Elgato only outputs video/audio to the TV via an HDMI cable, and newer TV's cannot handle a resolution lower than 480p when it's sent via an HDMI cable. Since PlayStation 2 games display in 480p when using a component video cable (or the special PS3 cable supplied with the Elgato Game Capture HD), they work fine when going directly from the PS2 to the Elgato to the TV. However, PlayStation 1 games (even when played on the PS2) are displayed in their native 240p resolution, so the video signal must be up-scaled prior to being sent to the Elgato if you want it to display properly on your TV. Hence, the purchase of THIS product!

The final setup looks like this when streaming PlayStation 1 games on a PlayStation 2 with the Elgato capture card:

[PlayStation 2] ---(RCA/Composite Video Cable)---> [GANA RCA to HDMI Converter] ---(HDMI Cable)---> [Elgato Game Capture HD] ---(HDMI Cable)---> [Television]

There is also a USB cable going from the Elgato Game Capture HD to a computer, which is used for streaming.

My son set this all up recently and has only logged about 2 hours on the converter so far, but from what he can tell, it works well; there are no noticeable delays in video or sound, and the picture looks clear on his twitch stream and on his TV. DISCLAIMER: It might be tough to notice any VERY MINOR blurring in the picture, as he is using the converter to stream PS1 games, which have old (read: bad) graphics, so a few pixels here or there wouldn't really make any noticeable difference. He didn't notice any difference in the picture when compared to plugging the RCA/Composite Video cable straight from the PS2 into the TV though.

He recommends unplugging the converter from its power source when not in use, as it will continue to output a signal of just a blue screen when it's receiving power, but not receiving an input signal. Some other reviewers said that the unit can get pretty warm, so he figures it's best to leave it unplugged when not in use to prevent any potential issues from extended heat generation.

Hopefully this review helps any gamers out there who are looking to stream some classic PlayStation 1 (or otherwise older, lower resolution) games. Cheers!

Zero Signal

A good way to marry old and new technology

I am (reluctant) tech support for some older family members who want to keep their old AV devices running forever. Don't talk to them about streaming-- they have ten zillion old VHS tapes and DVDs, and the almost-as-ancient equipment to watch all that old stuff.

But their new TV only has HDMI inputs. "How come my old TV could play it but this fancy new one can't?" Well, mostly because you're a dinosaur who still wants to watch the Tim Burton Batman on VHS instead of Amazon Prime.

However, for the sake of diplomacy I merely shrug my shoulders and have yet another last-minute purchase overnighted to their house.

Luckily it only takes a few cables and this inexpensive adapter to get their fancy new TV to talk to their relic of a VHS player. I also hooked up their (non-Blu Ray) DVD player.

For those of you keeping score, aside from the converter I needed:
-A selector switch with multiple RCA inputs (to change between the VCR and DVD player)
-3 sets of RCA cables (2 inputs to the switch, one output to this converter)
-An HDMI cable
-A power strip that had built-in USB ports to power this unit as well as the TV, DVD player and VHS

At the time I bought this, I think I spent about $50 on the whole mess. Probably closer to $75 today.

Setup was a breeze. Everything is plug and play, and everything worked correctly right out of the gate.

How well does it work? Picture quality is OK with the DVD player, acceptable but not stellar with the VHS. Keep in mind however that the DVD player is almost 20 years old and the VHS is probably closer to 35. There are inherent limitations in both technologies which are only compounded by their ages. The signals are going through a selector switch and about a mile of cable, which I'm sure isn't helping. I'm moderately amazed that it works as well as it does.

One more thing-- someone asked whether this would work with a Wii and I can say that it does. Another family member is using one for that purpose and I saw it functioning a couple of days ago (in 2023) so it's certainly capable of doing the job. Kind of a trip to see Wii Bowling on a 65 inch TV...

Make no mistake about it, this converter is designed to keep a mostly-obsolete technology going a little longer. However, if you have a legacy AV device with RCA outputs and you want to use it with a modern TV, you can get it done inexpensively and with results that will be limited only by the original device and media.

Excellent conversion of standard video to HDMI

I had an original Wii with the standard RCA type of video output that I needed to get connected to a TV with only HDMI inputs. I tried two different models of the Wii to HDMI converters that plug into the back of the Wii. Problem is, those converters really just pass the 480 format signal (the max the Wii can output) directly through to the TV and do not up-convert to the 720 or 1080 formats. The GANA converter was the third adapter I tried which was exactly what was necessary to play the Wii on a newer TV. It requires a USB power source which you can plug into the back of the Wii. The 720 format did not work for my particular TV, but the 1080 format worked perfectly. When switching the output format on the converter, I had to power off and then power on the Wii in order for it to switch. After that, it worked great. I give the picture quality 4 stars, but I think that is mainly due to the Wii output format being displayed on a TV that supports 4k. I suspect that is not the fault of the adapter.
