Made my garage usable all summer!

Made my garage usable all summer!
I use my garage as a hobby room, workshop, a place to think, and once in a while, just escape. Most of all I use it to do stuff for others, and this time of year, it’s impossible to work out there without sweating like crazy. It is an attached garage with a bonus room over and only one exterior wall, besides the wall with the overhead door in it. The door is insulated and the exterior wall is brick veneer, so I thought I might have decent results trying to condition it in some way. It is about 500 sq ft.There are no windows, and I was not cutting a giant rectangular hole in the brick wall, so a window unit was out of the question. A split system was an option, but I was looking at $2-3k and lots of work. I read all about freestanding AC units and settled on this one. I liked that this one had the dual hoses. That made sense, and I chose the heater to make the garage a 365-day space. It came UPS two days faster than the est. arrival date. The box was holding on for dear life when it arrived, but much to my surprise, the unit did not have a scratch. I let it sit upright overnight to let the coolant settle before plugging it in. I was lucky in that last year I had cut two 6” diameter holes from my garage into my crawl space to allow air to enter, and then be exhausted by a wall-mounted exhaust fan I had installed on the opposite wall. I was able to use those two holes for the AC inlet and outlet hose connections. With minor ingenuity, the AC hoses easily connected to the two 6” size damper vents I had installed there. I turned the unit on, set it to 72, and hoped for the best.Within about 6 hours, the garage was colder than the house. It has been working perfectly for almost 3 weeks. The garage is now just like any other room, and I’m hoping that by keeping it cooler, it radiates less heat into the rest of the house and offsets my AC costs inside. That remains to be seen, but it sure can’t hurt. Like any AC, it does bring the garage temp down, then cycles off when not needed. I’ve tried running the unit with the inlet hose just open to the garage, but the humidity climbed and it was not as comfortable as when both hoses were connected to an exterior space. The hoses included are super quality and the window installation kit is very well thought out, though I did not need it.The unit is slick. Very attractive. Intuitive backlit controls and remote. I do wish it had an app for my phone. It does have a 24-hr timer, but I’m having best results not letting the temp vary by much. The self-evaporation feature is working. I removed the rear condensate cap thinking it might drip onto the floor a little, but no drips. A little surface condensate collects around the cooling vent, but nothing major. I expect it will drip out the condensate outlet in heat mode this winter. It runs extremely quietly. It would not be an issue at all sleeping beside this thing. All in all, this unit has been worth every penny so far. It basically added a usable-all-year room to the house. Kudos to Whynter for making such a great unit and having an incredible delivery time. It came cross country to NC in a matter of a few days.Highly recommended! I’ll try to report back once I use heater mode or if there are any hiccups.

I will start off by saying that this AC unit is amazing, easy to use, has great portability, and overall great quality. This AC unit has been crucial to keeping my room cold, and it keeps it that way. It came with some window attachments for the intake and exhaust. The attachment is great. It fits my window. I only have to cut some off because it blocks the intake a little, which isn't a major problem. I have had this for about 3 months now, and I haven't had any problems; the only thing is, when you drain it, you have to get a sheet pan that's less than 4" in height and drain it. When you have to... It's a lot of condensation, so be careful to make sure you get a big enough pan. Other than it being close to me because my room is not that big, it fits perfectly, and it isn't too loud, it would be nice if it was quieter, which I notice because my room is small, so if it was in a big area, you wouldn't even notice honestly. Great Buy!

Nice easy to install. Our AC is out in the middle of summer in Phoenix, AZ where it is literally 117 degrees some days. We were gone a few days and AC went out when we returned. We ordered this right away to get relief. Rolls easily which is nice. Lots of hose room for the intake and outtake dual hose. Has been running all day and night everyday for weeks now. A little quieter than EXPECTED. At this point runs very well and saving us from extreme heat waiting on AC to get fixed.

TL;DR - for folks in the mid 80s - mid 90s average "hot" temp, this makes the summer comfortable, no problems sleeping in the other room (which ran 3-4 degrees higher than the room with the AC) though I wouldn't want to be completely under the covers, especially any heavier blankets. Never had to empty it. Noisy as heck, like, not "loud" but it makes it hard to hear softer conversation for sure - my girlfriend asked me to repeat myself at least 2-3x for everything I tried to say when the compressor is on. I keep it in the living room, it definitely impacts the quality of the TV/movie experience and that's with a quality surround sound set up at a decent volume. It gets a good bit of buzzing/rumbling as it ages too - I worry that it will not hold up, but so far has performed admirably. No shipping damage. All modes work as expected though the heat mode behaves oddly in terms of when it blows heat and when it doesnt and some of the noises it makes, but it does work effectively. The window kit gives a generous width, possibly one of the largest. A major criticism is that it blows the air upward more than outward - I remedied this with placing a fan in front of the ac on the worst days. Portable ACs, from what I have seen, mostly suck, so it seem that picking one is an exercise in finding the least sucky, I think this unit is worth taking the risk on if a portable suits your needs - it has served me well thus far.

More details - Despite the huge BTU rating, the air conditioner does not make the room an arctic paradise, however, make no mistake, the air conditioner does pack a punch and cool admirably. I took the advice of other reviewers and insulated the exhaust pipe, diverted the flow of the exhaust from the outdoor-intake, sealed any gaps in the exhaust with reflective tape, and sealed around the window as well - I would say the room was about a degree colder in the same time as prior to the insulation - so it helps, but not enormously. I also added the antimicrobial filter, and an outdoor-intake filter. Despite the outdoor-intake, the AC created negative air pressure in the dwelling, which drew cellar odors up into the rooms. Often, I ran the AC with a window open and a fan blowing in - crazy I know, but it mitigated the odors being drawn from the cellar - believe it or not, the AC kept up. I ran the fan in one room and the AC in the other - in the room with the fan, I was measuring temperatures close to outdoor temps, in the room with the AC the temps ran consistently 10 degrees lower. It made the difference between tolerable and disgusting. On hotter days I closed up the window and achieved around roughly 15 degrees colder with the air conditioner. I was using it to cool roughly 750 sq ft. Best practices for me was using a couple fans to draw it into other rooms, keeping the AC on all day as it holds a cold temperature MUCH better than lowering a hot temperature, and setting the AC a couple degrees colder than what I actually wanted. Even if I closed everything up and shaded all sources of light, the compressor would run all day on a warm day, but typically in the evening, even warm evenings, it would cycle on and off. On the worst stretches I was careful to give the compressor a break as I was concerned I was shortening its life. You definitely need to look at this unit as a partner in solving a heat problem, not as the solution itself - it required some creativity and adjustment for me to come to like it. When all is said though, the cooling capacity is there, albeit far less than a comparable BTU window unit seems to deliver, but one of the best in the portable class. It worked out for me.

I did a lot of research on these before choosing this one. I already have a Sharp Library Quiet in my bedroom. It is 4 years old and runs like a champ. But with Seattle heat in the 90's I needed something more to cool the entire one bedroom apartment, approx. 700 sq ft.
The prior reviews with pictures were an enormous help in making my decisions. Granted, the few negative reviews gave me hesitation, but i decided to go with this unit knowing Amazon would take it back if it did not live up to my expectations.
It was delivered via Prime quickly. Had to help the FedEx guy unload it, it was shipped upright, at least in his truck. I sat it inside the door and cut the strap, then lifted the outer carton off. Beautiful machine well packaged and no damage.
I have encasement windows, so with advance planning had gone to Lowes and had the plywood cut to fit the window minus the 6" plastic hose connector that came with the unit. ($11 for thin oak, I use blackout shades so Plexiglas was not a necessity for me)
Super easy setup after letting it sit for 2 hours per the recommendations. I also bought cut-to-fit air filters for the intake air hose. The window kit was set up and the plywood in place within 30 minutes and weather stripped. As a previous review noted, the intake and exhaust outlet are side by side. To make it more efficient, I got a 5" to 4" converter nozzle and attached it to the exhaust vent. I got an elbow joint turning the exhaust away from the intake opening. I then put a 4" dryer hose on the outlet and ran it far away from the intake vent. I also bought some insulated wrap for the exhaust hose running from the unit to the window inside my apartment. This is a must since the hose gets VERY hot and cancels the cooling effect somewhat.
At this point it was 90+ degrees outside, and it was 85 inside. I plugged it up and was kind of disappointed in the not-so-cool air blowing out. Within an hour, it had the temp down to 78 inside. It stayed there all evening making me think this unit may be a dud. My old Sharp keeps my bedroom at a constant 65. Like another reviewer stated, I went to bed hoping for the best, but expecting to return this on Monday. I closed my bedroom door at midnight and went to sleep. I slept in till 8am and when I opened the bedroom door, I was met with a gush of COLD air. I left the unit on high fan speed set at 64 on the blue display. I set a digital thermometer at waist level in the room and it read 63 degrees. The unit just needed time to cool the room and did it WAY better than I expected. I did leave the ceiling fan on low overnight to help keep the air moving. This unit does blow the air straight up, slightly angled outward from the front. The ceiling fan helps circulate the air. Be sure you have the fan set with the blades rotating counter-clockwise to move the air downward.
Today the temp is at 90 outside, a comfy 70 inside. I have the unit set to 65 on med fan speed. I could not be happier! The unit is not that loud, either. My Sharp is a single hose and is a bit quieter, but this one is by no means loud. I have it sitting right behind my couch between 2 surround speakers. I can hear sound fine from both speakers behind me.
I hooked up a drain hose to a bladder bag to capture any drain water from the unit. I have the same hooked up to my Sharp and it drains about a gallon a day. This one has not drained any after 24 hours of constant use.
Overall I am extremely happy with this unit. It is sleek, does not take up a lot of space and does what it is supposed to very well.
I will update if I find any negatives.
***UPDATE***
Still very happy with this unit. The thermostat actually keeps the temp in the room at the set temp on the display. The unit does an excellent job evaporating the water that collect in the drain pan, as I have yet to have any drain out. I disconnected the drain bag and tipped the unit back just to make sure it wasn't blocked. It wasn't! But no water has drained after a month of this running. I am still emptying the one in my bedroom multiple times daily. Will update again when my first electric bill since installing this arrives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Air Conditioner

The air conditioner is well made and good quality. Instructions were easy to follow for set up and installation. The timer function is great. In addition to being an air conditioner it is a fan, dehumidifier and heater. Offers temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. I have an odd window to attach the hoses to, but with some creative thinking the set up was fairly easy. It is bigger than I anticipated and louder than I expected. Overall I am very pleased with the product and would buy this brand again in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars and I am soooo happy with this machine

I did a lot of research before deciding which portable air conditioner to go with, and I am soooo happy with this machine. At first I was looking at single hose units, but after reading some articles I discovered that dual hose are much more efficient. It's big, but it's sleek looking and works like a charm. Also, I am very sensitive to sound, so I was concerned it would be too loud for me. It's not quiet, of course, but the tone is lower rather than high pitch, so it's more like white noise. It doesn't bother my ears. I haven't tried the heat option yet since we are in the middle of a heat wave, but I am super happy sitting inside my cool apartment, with the nice clean air it's creating from adding the 3M filter. Very good investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars It works well in my 700sqft apartment

This thing is huge and comes in a massive box that contains another box.
Its possible to unbox alone but would recommend having someone help if possible.

I got one unit to help keep my apartment cool during the summer.
Shipping was quick and in good condition.
Machines installation and setup was quick and easy.

The unit is loud, so if you're a light sleeper then you may not want this in your bedroom.
It takes a while to cool down a room and I used my fans to help push the air around and cool down the rest of my 1 bedroom apartment.

Overall, I'm happy with it so far, works as expected.
Will update this in a couple months.

Bought in June 2022, less than 2 years later the compressor died. Reach out to Whynter on April 18, 2024 demanded I send $170 US $ to cover shipping What?? Then Whynter LLC made an Error on the shipping label when shipped via UPS June 11. After a month it's frozen 6 miles away from Whynter as Whynter has not provided a revised Shipping Label nor Instructions. Filed complaint with the BBB and California Department of Consumer Affairs...
Proceeding to file a suit in Orange County Superior Court

LOT'S of better options on the market and Whynter's actions are illegal

Lost my purchase price and the additional monies the demanded and refuse and or neglected to get it resolved

5.0 out of 5 stars This Air Conditioner is Well Designed & Reliable

The brand name, Whynter, was unknown to me, so I felt we were taking a chance in buying it. But we are very impressed with this product, which is well designed, with excellent quality control and reliable performance.

We use both the heating and cooling features equally as much - and both modes are very effective. As a dehumidifier, the lack of a humidity target setting means we use our dedicated dehumidifiers instead. But if you didn't have a separate dehumidifier, this feature would be useful.

Like all appliances that use an air compressor, the unit produces a fair bit of noise. Only an exterior, non-portable air conditioner would reduce this inherent noise problem. But for many users, exterior or window-insert type air conditioners are simply not practical. In our case, exposing an air conditioner to the hostile exterior environment would mean that the unit would not last very long.

The two hose design makes the product very efficient, and most of the competition want a lot more money for this feature. Because of outside air having poor air quality in this area, we typically do not have the intake actually drawing in outside air, but using interior air instead (without the second hose). Thus we affectionately call our AC unit, the "Elephant in the Room".
