The S.T.A.R. approach is Abbate's main tool. After years of reading self-help books and listening to motivational speakers, Abbate concluded that he needed to create his own method of success. It is simple and easy to understand, as well as challenging. Focusing largely on the idea of envisioning goals or success, the steps allow the reader to focus on one thing at a time and slowly progress to finally reaping new results.
The book is divided into three sections: "Challenge Accepted", "Digging Deeper" and "Exercises and Resources". The first section focuses on S.T.A.R., taking the reader through a chapter by chapter guide through the tool. The second section encourages the reader to apply the approach and explains how to bring the different steps together. Lastly, the exercises and resources provided in the final chapter includes sections where the reader has to engage and use the book as an exercise book, filling in blank sections.
One of my favourite sections in this book was the multiple resources added in the back of the book. Abbate has included a list of other books, as well as online video sources such as YouTube and TED talks which he recommends the reader explores after they have finished the book. Essentially Abbate guides the reader in the right direction as they complete their book so that they can continue on their journey which he has started them on.
This book contained no spelling or grammar mistakes and seemed to be edited in a professional manner. There was no evidence of profanity and while the author has his own religious views, these are not forced upon the reader in any way, making the book suitable to people of any religion or non-religious beliefs.
I have rated Uncommon Sense by Bill Abbate 4 out of 4 stars. Self-help books that contain exercises impress me and engage the reader in a way that most self-help books do not. Along with the professional editing and engaging writing, there was little fault I could find with this book and so, I believe it deserves a high rating.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in becoming successful and who is ready to take their success into their own hands. I would even recommend it to teenage readers who are preparing to graduate and who are motivated to start their respective careers or are about to go to college.
What a life changing book this is. Easy to read and it provides a simple, implementable method for creating not just a new life, but practically anything one could want. Charles Maney, CTL Publishing Group

This book is well worth the time you will invest in reading it, something that can't be said for too many books today. The approach is easy to understand, and definitely provides the framework needed to improve one's life. John Humphrey, NFBL Leadership Association

The acronym S.T.A.R. is a simple memory aid to the basic theme of his book; the See, Think, Act, and Reap approach to improved living. For me, my "See" part needed the most improvement; the art of noticing. Know your destination in your mind (and on paper), then check regularly to ensure that you are on course. In this quick and distracting world, Bill emphasizes slowing down and being more aware.
Business owner or not, any individual could benefit from the approach laid out in Uncommon Sense. Worth the time and money!
"Always keep working on who you are becoming" (p106). Bill Abbate doesn't just inspire us to this goal but provides the coaching we all need. An excellent book with easy to understand concepts for anyone who wants to live life better! S.T.A.R. really is a DNA for better living. For the CEO to the stay at home parent and everyone in between, I highly recommend this book!
Have dreams you want to pursue? Learn how to do it in a healthy way. Have a family that depends on you? Learn how to meet those needs without losing yourself. Have a career that demands much of you? Learn how to divide your time and sharpen your focus.
If you want to live more fully and more actively without having to compromise the things you love, this book is for you.
