Lord of the Eyrie Kindle Edition

Love, War, and the Price of Loyalty

Transylvania, Kingdom of Hungary, 1440:

Finally home after five years away, warrior-nobleman Sándor Szilágyi is met by a dying father, a resentful younger brother, his child-bride all grown up and the family estate raided by the Ottomans. As he struggles to adjust to life as a landlord, Sándor's authority is challenged by two strong-minded and fearless women: Margit, his faithful and righteous wife, determined to keep him on the straight and narrow; and Anna, his sister-in-law, a scheming temptress bent on ruining him in order to take his land.

After committing a mortal sin and desperate to win back the woman he loves, Sándor seeks absolution by accepting his overlord's summons to fight the Ottomans. But his obsession with war will lead him down a perilous path.

Loyalties are tested, danger lurks around every corner, and Sándor's struggle to balance his duty to protect his land and family from his relatives' greedy hands, as well as his duty to defend his country on the battlefield, will come at a terrible cost.

*****

"In a world of chivalry and honour, Ms Dunne brings to life the harsh and raw reality of medieval 15th-century Hungary. So often, historical novels are fixed in the settings of England and France, but this one shifts the story to a place and time not familiar to most historical readers, thus giving a fresh look at the time period while connecting readers to the familiar landscape of war, love, lust, betrayal, loss, and pain." - The Historical Fiction Company Review

As a Hungarian, I have always loved 15th century stories about the kingdom at the rim of Europe with its heroic fights against the Ottoman empire and the raise and shine of János Hunyadi, the war hero and his son, the later Hungarian renaissance king, Matthias Corvinus. Ms. Dunne’s Lord of the Eyrie captures the period through the fate of a fictional noble knight and his family.

The astounding historical accuracy would do credit even for a native Hungarian writer. The sweeping tale does not let one stop reading with unexpected twists till the end. Love intertwined with the harsh reality of medieval wars, honesty fighting against wickedness without glorifying romanticism makes this book a memorable read. I can’t wait to read the sequel soon!

A fast-paced narrative filled with love and battles, brave heroes and scheming villains. Hungarian history woven seamlessly into the plot and detailed descriptions of medieval weaponry and warfare make this a great choice for anyone wanting to learn more about the time period.

Reads as if it was written by a 14 year old. Plus sex scenes every 5 pages or so. Very Poor excuse for a novel. Did Not Finish - Deleted

I'm fascinated by Eastern Europe's medieval period right now, and was thrilled to see a recommendation of this book, so I bought it. It's the story of a knight from Wallachia (future Romania) named Sandor, his family and military adventures, and his relations with the historical figure, John Hunyadi. An easy read, the novel encompasses the most turbulent years of Sandor's life, especially in dealing with a scheming younger brother and that man's manipulative wife. The only complaint I have is the ending; it felt unfinished and unfair to the protagonist, BUT leaves a strong suggestion of a sequel, which I hope the author will undertake.

If you’re a medieval history fan such as myself, you don’t want to miss this extraordinary journey into the real Transylvania of the 15th century. Katarina Dunne’s meticulously researched novel will have you riding into danger and woe in the council room, in the bed chamber, and on the battlefield. Balancing out all the calamities you will find tender and thoughtful scenes tucked here and there to heal the heart.
The main character, Sandor, returns from years away and takes over the family estate after his father’s death. His child bride, who he had left behind, has grown and assumed much of the management in Sandor’s absence. He disregards his wife and younger brother and focuses on stopping the incursions of the Ottomans onto his lands.
Katarina Dunne besets him with all the troubles of a border lord whose estate is barely staying afloat. Personal and family dysfunction feeds into isolation, treachery, and betrayal. The characters are especially believable for the time period, with all their bravado and weaknesses exposed.
I particularly liked the battle scenes. She describes the settings wonderfully; you can see the mountain crags and hear the war wagons as her characters are drawn into the violence of the age. Tragic twists and unjust decisions kept me turning pages to find out what happens next.
A thoroughly enjoyable book!

The author offers a fictionalized account of a Hungarian lord and his family in the challenging times of the 15th century. The colorful and richly imagined story is appealing for being founded on solid and thorough historical research. It is set in a time of bitter and painful conflicts, not only among Hungarians and Ottomans but also among competing interests within the Hungarian realm, perched on the perilous fault line between early medieval society and an emerging nation state. The author created several compelling and believable characters, profoundly flawed and admirable at the same time. The conflicts portrayed include age-old dilemmas of jealousy, pride, betrayal, deceit, and lust that challenge loyalty, friendship, faith, and love. Dunne did not attempt to sugarcoat in any way the brutality that often came to the fore in the form of unspeakable cruelty, raids, and rapes in addition to vivid scenes of battle. The novel provides a sense of the local economy with all the conflicts that are engendered by it, such as control over mining and the valuable proceeds. It also depicts the critical role played by women who often found themselves as administrators of estates while their husbands were away at war to protect their domains and in fealty to their king. The book contains a list of sources, a glossary, and translations of some of the Hungarian expressions used in the text. Recommended.
