Product Description

In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won— and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Kevin Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

I loved Horizon. It's a movie we so rarely see where scenes play out to their natural end. It doesn't rush every moment like so much of what's in theaters (and on TV). I was a bit restless at the beginning, but the longer it went on, the less I wanted it to end.

There are three main storylines that never connect. That's OK because chapter two is coming next month. If you can wait a week for a new episode on TV, can't you wait a month for a new movie?

I won't describe the plot(s) because it's a lot of standard stuff about lonely men, struggling pioneers, and conflict with native tribes. You want revisionism, Leone is always there.

There's not a single bad performance across dozens of actors. While the characters may not be the most in depth, they never come off as caricatures. Living on the frontier is hard and it can simplify a person.

I think Costner did make a mistake shooting in 1.85 instead of 2.35. There are so many beautiful landscapes (including monument valley) that would have looked better in a wider frame. But this movie still looks great on a big screen. See it the way it was meant to be seen.

This is a big movie that is both epic and intimate. I still enjoy Marvel, but Horizon is a cool drink of water in a sometimes dusty movie landscape.

And don't listen to crybabies who pay to see an R rated Western, with many murders and scalpings, then get upset by cursing and 2 seconds of nudity.

Wow, no wonder the poor guy does not get out to see many movies these days.
This is not a review. I have not seen Kostner's new film, nor will I until it is complete. I am sick and tired of "reviewers" lambasting chunks of multi-part films before the whole work is complete, especially today, in the age of the press-a-key critic
Example. "Rebel Moon". First half comes out - Boom. It suffers from the curse of Snyder. The second half of the movie could have been "Citizen Kane," and it would not have made one bit of difference. The whole thing would have still been a sci-fi "Heaven's Gate".
So, no review here. I'll wait until this monster is finished (if it ever is) before I pass any judgement on it. Strangely, I find myself in the position of whishing old KC a whole lot of luck. I have never been a big fan. I own one film, "Open Range." So, he's had a lot of practice. Let's hope he puts it to good use.

HORIZON’s four storylines are rich with character and incident comprising a HOW THE WEST WAS WON for a 21st Century audience. The emphasis is on the hardships the settlers, soldiers and saddle tramps all endured, sometimes out of their naïveté or greed and other times in their lack of choice for options when bad experiences and bad behavior drove them west. It's no coincidence that it opens with the Indigenous people (the People) slaughtering settlers and ends with Whites slaughtering Indigenous people. The scenery is awe-inspiring, the shots deceptively well-composed in their simplicity, and the stories compelling -- I know this movie has received some bad and mixed reviewes, but this only reflects the limitations of modern audiences to know how to receive a movie that takes its time telling its interwoven (and it is interwoven) tale. The idea that this is slow and nothing happens reflects viewers too accustomed to the swift, poor storytelling so common on movie screens today. Don't wait for the inevitable reassessment -- see it now, on a big movie screen. Then own it on physical media. This is GODFATHER level entertainment.

some of his best work yet it is long and some say it is like dancing with wolfs but its not some hour and a half movie its a rare breed of movie that's trying to tell a good story and build the world around it slowly to give it more depth and feel to it i would give it a solid 8.5 out of 10 it has a great cast and good story building to it and i think chapter 2 will really fill it in

I hardly watch new movies anymore because I don't tend to see any good movies being made anymore, but went to see Horizon because I saw Kevin Costner was in it. Three hours I could have spent doing anything else. A lot different storylines in the movies going on that at the end, they had to do a sped up reel of everything that happened to summarize what was happening. Therefore, poor character development and weak characters. Lack of chemistry between the characters. Random unnecessary nudity of some brat and sex scene with old man Costner and hag looking young hooker. Lots of offensive cursing of the word Jesus Christ. Had I known, I wouldn't have set foot in the theater. Shame because there are quite a few of known actors in there.

This is not a film I can recommend. It’s well-acted, has a great cast, and the cinematography is beautiful but to end a three hour (first part) film and feel zero investment in what I just saw was incredibly disorienting…and disappointing.

This is the passion project Kevin Costner left Yellowstone to make and it’s a real shame he made that choice. I believe in the man as a filmmaker but something went terribly wrong here. We’re faced with a collection of stories/scenes of different people in different locations throughout the country, with little to no connection (thus far), everything feeling disjointed and often without context. I felt like a pebble being skipped across a pond. Although I understood the events as they transpired, I lacked any sense of immersion in them.

The film ends on what’s clearly a sizzle reel of scenes from the upcoming second part, but it’s done in a way of a fast skip through random clips, and without any transition from the ending of Part One, so that in itself was very disorienting. I think it would have been best to leave that out after the way the storyline has already presented itself to its audience.

I will see he second part next month when it releases, but probably only because my theater chain offered up a 25% discount for a ticket if I bought a ticket to Part One early. I can only hope there will be a payoff that will make this investment of time worth my while. Please, Mr. Costner, bring it all home for me!
