Product Description
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won— and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Kevin Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

There are three main storylines that never connect. That's OK because chapter two is coming next month. If you can wait a week for a new episode on TV, can't you wait a month for a new movie?
I won't describe the plot(s) because it's a lot of standard stuff about lonely men, struggling pioneers, and conflict with native tribes. You want revisionism, Leone is always there.
There's not a single bad performance across dozens of actors. While the characters may not be the most in depth, they never come off as caricatures. Living on the frontier is hard and it can simplify a person.
I think Costner did make a mistake shooting in 1.85 instead of 2.35. There are so many beautiful landscapes (including monument valley) that would have looked better in a wider frame. But this movie still looks great on a big screen. See it the way it was meant to be seen.
This is a big movie that is both epic and intimate. I still enjoy Marvel, but Horizon is a cool drink of water in a sometimes dusty movie landscape.
And don't listen to crybabies who pay to see an R rated Western, with many murders and scalpings, then get upset by cursing and 2 seconds of nudity.
This is not a review. I have not seen Kostner's new film, nor will I until it is complete. I am sick and tired of "reviewers" lambasting chunks of multi-part films before the whole work is complete, especially today, in the age of the press-a-key critic
Example. "Rebel Moon". First half comes out - Boom. It suffers from the curse of Snyder. The second half of the movie could have been "Citizen Kane," and it would not have made one bit of difference. The whole thing would have still been a sci-fi "Heaven's Gate".
So, no review here. I'll wait until this monster is finished (if it ever is) before I pass any judgement on it. Strangely, I find myself in the position of whishing old KC a whole lot of luck. I have never been a big fan. I own one film, "Open Range." So, he's had a lot of practice. Let's hope he puts it to good use.
This is the passion project Kevin Costner left Yellowstone to make and it’s a real shame he made that choice. I believe in the man as a filmmaker but something went terribly wrong here. We’re faced with a collection of stories/scenes of different people in different locations throughout the country, with little to no connection (thus far), everything feeling disjointed and often without context. I felt like a pebble being skipped across a pond. Although I understood the events as they transpired, I lacked any sense of immersion in them.
The film ends on what’s clearly a sizzle reel of scenes from the upcoming second part, but it’s done in a way of a fast skip through random clips, and without any transition from the ending of Part One, so that in itself was very disorienting. I think it would have been best to leave that out after the way the storyline has already presented itself to its audience.
I will see he second part next month when it releases, but probably only because my theater chain offered up a 25% discount for a ticket if I bought a ticket to Part One early. I can only hope there will be a payoff that will make this investment of time worth my while. Please, Mr. Costner, bring it all home for me!
Looking forward to the remaining chapters
