'Like all the best vintages Jack Lark has aged to perfection. Scarred, battered and bloody, his story continues to enthral' Anthony Riches

Roguish hero Jack Lark - soldier, leader, imposter - crosses borders once more as he pursues a brand-new adventure in Africa.

London, 1868. For five years, Jack Lark has run a thriving club in the backstreets of Whitechapel. But life takes a devastating turn when he refuses to bow down to the East End's most formidable criminal.

A wanted man, Jack flees England. Together with his friend and treasure hunter, Macgregor, he joins the British army on campaign across Abyssinia, a high-stakes mission that returns Jack to the battlefield and on to the fortress of Magdala where the formidable Emperor Tewodros has taken British subjects prisoner.

But life on the run can turn dangerous, especially in a land ravaged by war . . .

Praise for the Jack Lark series:

'Brilliant' Bernard Cornwell

'Enthralling' The Times

'Bullets fly, emotions run high and treachery abounds... exceptionally entertaining historical action adventure' Matthew Harffy

'Expect ferocious, bloody action from the first page' Ben Kane

'You feel and experience all the emotions and the blood, sweat and tears that Jack does... I devoured it in one sitting' Parmenion Books

Paul’s love of military history started at an early age. A childhood spent watching films like Waterloo and Zulu whilst reading Sharpe, Flashman and the occasional Commando comic, gave him a desire to know more of the men who fought in the great wars of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. This fascination led to a desire to write and his series of novels featuring the brutally courageous Victorian rogue and imposter Jack Lark burst into life in 2013. Since then Paul has continued to write, developing the Jack Lark series to great acclaim. Now with Jack taking a well-earned rest, Paul is moving onto a new, exciting project that starts a new series set against the backdrop of World War 2.

I've read every Jack Lark book, including the short stories and Mr. Collard does not disappoint. The characters are believable, the action thrilling and the sense of "you are there" gets your blood going.😁👍

The author should quit his city job and write full time. Unfortunately he develops awesome characters but they disappear. The Devil? Rose? Etc.. Money in Boston bank? Not a word. Every book left me hanging permanently. Very unsatisfactory for this reader. I will buy book 10 for adventure but I know it will end exactly the same. So much missing from storylines. All these storylines undeveloped or disappear. How did Babylon happen from Mexico? Also Big mistake in 1 case of Indian mutiny. Author associated Pork with Hindus and Beef with Muslims. Shame he
has aged Jack so quickly. He has a real talent just like Sharpe and Flashman please more!!! Let him meet previous characters!

I love Jack Lark, but this adventure just didn't grab me at all. As one rater said, the beggining was classic Jack, but once he left England, Lark began to fade. I had trouble staying interested in the story and found myself skimming through the pages. The book was more of an historical account of the destruction of Magdala then a Jack Lark adventure. Oh well, Collard can't be perfect all the time.

I was very disappointed in this book. It was not the same quality as the previous books in the series. It started off well, but about halfway through the plot collapsed, like the author just lost interest. The book did not seem to follow the same theme as the rest of the series. One of the enjoyable parts of this series is Lark’s participation in events, here he just seemed to be a spectator wandering around, things seemed to happen randomly with little to no explanation.

The ninth book in the series does not disappoint. The action is more muted but the introduction of Watson as a side character revealed a human side to Jack that made him all the more realistic. As always not disappointed and left wanting more please.

Hi like the Jack Lark stories. This book was fun to read too, towards the end the story got a little exaggerated.
For everyone who liked the first books, will like this one too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jack is back and the mad Gorilla King beckons

The ninth Lark story and Jack is back from his trip across the Atlantic and for me much better for it.

Th last couple of stories were not, for me, the strongest of the series to date .( But then I have no particular interest in the American Civil War).

A lively start in the murky world of Victorian East End London, a little remembered campaign in Abyssinia, ( Thanks for that, I will certainly be reading more about the campaign!), and a lively sub plot.

Brutal, bloody and thoroughly enjoyable. Very much back to the cracking form of the earlier books.

Cant wait to see whee Larks wanderlust takes him next.
