Over the course of a generation, algorithms have gone from mathematical abstractions to powerful mediators of daily life. Algorithms have made our lives more efficient, more entertaining, and, sometimes, better informed. At the same time, complex algorithms are increasingly violating the basic rights of individual citizens. Allegedly anonymized datasets routinely leak our most sensitive personal information; statistical models for everything from mortgages to college admissions reflect racial and gender bias. Meanwhile, users manipulate algorithms to "game" search engines, spam filters, online reviewing services, and navigation apps.

Understanding and improving the science behind the algorithms that run our lives is rapidly becoming one of the most pressing issues of this century. Traditional fixes, such as laws, regulations and watchdog groups, have proven woefully inadequate. Reporting from the cutting edge of scientific research,
The Ethical Algorithm offers a new approach: a set of principled solutions based on the emerging and exciting science of socially aware algorithm design. Michael Kearns and Aaron Roth explain how we can better embed human principles into machine code - without halting the advance of data-driven scientific exploration. Weaving together innovative research with stories of citizens, scientists, and activists on the front lines, The Ethical Algorithm offers a compelling vision for a future, one in which we can better protect humans from the unintended impacts of algorithms while continuing to inspire wondrous advances in technology.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...the authors take us on a journey through the main socio-algorithmic problems representing social constraints upon algorithms, their consequences and trade-offs. [T]hey provide concrete technical solutions for the challenges discussed throughout the book's 5 chapters: privacy, fairness, user-data-algorithm feedback loop, data-driven scientific discoveries and (brief) thoughts on the ethical issues (transparency, accountability, morality) yet to be pursued scientifically." -- ESSSAT News & Reviews

"It is elegantly written, easy to read and full of entertaining examples." -- Martin Peterson, Prometheus

"The data science revolution has important ethical underpinnings. The authors make a powerful case for the development of AI ethics as a subject in its own right. The Ethical Algorithm shows that apocalyptic predictions of an algorithmized society are far from inevitable. Anyone interested in AI should read and process this essential book."
--Dr. Marcos Lopez de Prado, C.E.O. of True Positive Technologies, L.P., and Quant of the Year 2019 (
The Journal of Portfolio Management)

"Is the road to hell paved with well-intentioned algorithms? Many think so. For a more level-headed view, read this timely book by two leading experts: clear, concise, focused on understanding the problems and figuring out solutions, it's your perfect guide to the new science of ethical algorithms."
--Dr. Pedro Domingos, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Washington and Author of
The Master Algorithm

"Can ethics ever be 'encoded' into algorithms? In this very timely book, Michael Kearns and Aaron Roth present a range of algorithmic solutions to problems seemingly inherent to algorithmic decision-making. In a very methodical yet entertaining manner, they highlight the potential of fixing issues related to privacy, fairness, and interpretability within algorithms without losing sight of the ongoing importance of human judgment."
--Dr. Dorothea Baur, Author and International Technology Ethics Consultant

"In a world with unprecedented access to data, this well researched book tackles the near term risks with concrete, real world examples that are facing algorithms today. The Ethical Algorithm is clearly articulated and full of insights."
--Carol E. Reiley, Cofounder, Advisor, and Board Member of Drive.ai

"Both Kearns and Roth, professors of computer and information science at the University of Pennsylvania, who have written extensively on algorithms and data science, here do a thorough job of explaining the science of algorithm design and the ethical and inherent technical difficulties in doing so."--Library Journal

"If you are interested in your online footprint, or just confused about the adverts you receive, I cannot recommend The Ethical Algorithm enough. It is a thought-provoking yet easy read, demystifies the processing of large datasets and neatly lays out the power -- and ultimately the limits -- of designing more responsible machine-learning algorithms."

--
Nature Physics

"Recommended for anyone with an interest in technology and the ethical implications of our increasing use of algorithms."--Andrei Rogobete, The Centre for Enterprise, Markets, and Ethics

Book Description

Algorithms have made our lives more efficient and entertaining-but not without a significant cost. Can we design a better future, one in which societal gains brought about by technology are balanced with the rights of citizens?

An amazing theoretical insight in ethical algorithmic design
I did not study computer science, though I do work as a data analyst. I’ve learned a lot of new things from this book, many of the constraints the author touched on in the book, such as: fairness, k-anonymity, differential privacy, even the process of analysing data for research have really changed the way I view my work in terms of ethical data handling, and the process in which I conduct my analysis. It’s an amazing for computer scientist, software developers, anyone who works with data, and even policy makers or tech enthusiasts.

This book is a great introduction to Ethics in Computer Science / Information Technology. As Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, and other technologies become increasingly important in our society, the threats posed by their use should concern all of us.

This is one of the must-read books on artificial intelligence. It offers new, powerful solutions to the challenges of algorithmic fairness, privacy, and ethics. As the authors state, "the science of ethical algorithms is in its infancy." This book is the first I've encountered (and I read a lot on the subject) that provides a definitive introduction to the science of ethical algorithms that is accessible to the general audience.

Emphatic and descriptive; good for business professionals and academic researchers. The writing on differential privacy (and its applications) along with the section on game theory will live long in my mind. Thoroughly encourage you to read this book if you want to know about how algorithms should behave to ensure privacy, fairness and accountability.

This book is definitely a page-turner, packed with interesting examples and new ways of thinking about some existing ML problems that have too often been ignored.
Factual, informative but still an interesting and easy enough read for someone who is not a ML/AI domain expert.

5.0 out of 5 stars I learned a lot about ML, privacy and ethical issues
Reviewed in Germany on November 14, 2020
I knew that something was wrong with algorithms and machine learning. Algorithms put us in boxes that are hard to escape from. This book explains why this is happening. Why your social network feeds keep showing the same type of news to you and why it participates into polarizing our societies. As if they needed this! The chapter on privacy goes deep into how a simple data about something you have done in the past can lead to identify you. Very scary!
The book gives options to tune your algorithms to remove bias and bring fairness to its outputs. Something that data scientists can leverage in their daily working life.

The beginning is very promising. Privacy chapter and the Pareto curves trade offs are very interesting. The next ones are just sketched. The most interesting one is the Conclusion. It’s very notable the amount of bibliography and how recent are many of them.

Given how widespread algorithms are in our daily lives (e.g. this review was recommended to you amongst others) - it is vital to understand how to make the implementation of these algorithms fair. Furthermore, it also speaks about the fascinating subject of differential privacy in an accessible way! Anybody interested in tech should consider these concepts when building/interacting with software that will handle user data!
