    $\begingroup$ Tides are actually more or less uniform on the high seas -- about 30 to 80 cm depending on the relative positions of the Sun and the Moon. They get bigger on some points on the coasts because of the specific configuration of the coast and the continental shelf which causes the waves to reflect and interfere, and sometimes resonate. $\endgroup$
