$\begingroup$ I actually visited California and several of those missions last summer :-) From what I took away from that: This 1-days ride seems based on fairly easy traveling. The monks/priests (especially the high-ranking ones) were usually quite fat and not used to hard traveling. $\endgroup$

$\begingroup$ Tonny -- no roads, and California is far from flat, plus it would quite typically be warm and sunny. Given also ample evidence form all over the internet that 30 miles per say is an expected distance, I'm not sure your comment is fair. $\endgroup$
