$\begingroup$ Interesting idea, quick question; would javelins also work? $\endgroup$– TrEs-2bCommented Aug 9, 2016 at 17:45

1$\begingroup$ @TrEs-2b - oh yes most definitely. Romans made heavy use of this tactic, as well as the Spanish (Spanish Jinete was the term I believe) made use of this tactic. Same idea, hover around your enemy but don't fully engage. Arrows allow for a larger amount of ammunition to be carried, however the javelin could be used as a spear giving them a fall back option if they got caught in hand to hand combat. all trade-offs. $\endgroup$– TwelfthCommented Aug 9, 2016 at 17:50

$\begingroup$ Related here: worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/6731/… I'd imagine your opponent could come up with some interesting tactics to try to spook the ostriches as I'm thinking they wouldn't be the most disciplined and probably hold irregular formations at best $\endgroup$– TwelfthCommented Aug 9, 2016 at 21:51

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. science-based), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
