    $\begingroup$ It's not just weight of food, but the nature of the food. Horses are grazers, eating mostly grasses, so horse cavalry can be fed with (relatively) easily stored hay & grain, or can often live off the land. Bears, being omnivores, would likely require a similar diet to humans, so the army would have to store & carry provisions for them, increasing the logistics train. $\endgroup$
