  • $\begingroup$ @Paŭlo Ebermann, this could be hand waived simply by sending the egg down with a limited food supply, or by having it require more food to sustain its large size than to reach it. Or it could simply exhaust the local food supply quickly by consuming the food meant for the local population, such as eating all of the farm animals and not being able to find enough wild animals to survive. I remember there being a science fiction show a while back with aliens that couldn't eat at all. They had a yolk sack and once it was expended they starved automatically.
