Feb 21, 2023 at 22:44 | comment | added | Robbie Goodwin | Isn't the Question the wrong way round, particularly in terms of human history? How does 'space' matter here, as opposed to simply 'advanced'? Why not compare your traders to Europeans dealing with Americans or Africans, and trading trinkets like glass beads, cheap blankets and poor-quality knives for valuable items such as animal skins or even gemstones?

Feb 20, 2023 at 22:04 | comment | added | Xavon_Wrentaile | Can you tell us a bit more about your space-fairing civilization? Because the Federation from Star Trek with its post scarcity culture and Prime Directive would have different potential reasons than the Galactic Republic from Star Wars.

Feb 20, 2023 at 20:50 | comment | added | JamieB | @fredsbend I don't think that one is a duplicate -- more of a "what" rather than the "why". In this case, the "why" could include the advanced civ trading for things they don't need at all (they actually throw it all straight into the disintegration chamber) because they had some other reason for wanting to be there.

Feb 20, 2023 at 2:56 | comment | added | AlexP | ... Or maybe the goods they buy get a high price exactly because they are exotic and hand-made? Like Cuban cigars, Oriental carpets, French wine, washi paper (known as "Japan paper" in the trade)? Scottish whisky aged in hand-made oak barrels? Why is Russia the one and only exporter of legal ivory in the world?
Feb 20, 2023 at 2:16 | comment | added | Pelinore | Why does anyone trade with anyone? because they have something they want and can't (or just can't be bothered to) make (extract or harvest, etc) themselves .. what those items are, they why's, character decisions etc leading to that is all up to you as the author, so this is probably going to attract some VTC for being opinion and story based.
