3$\begingroup$ They also stole their wallets (well, not literally wallets since the 13th century or whatever, but my point is they were robbers as well as killers). I don't think the Thuggee groups were universally spiritual, and it's entirely possible that, even if some of those groups were religious, the religious justification post-dates their practice of robbery by murder. With apologies to those few who genuinely were in it solely to avert the apocalypse, and not for lack of a more attractive means of earning an income. $\endgroup$– Steve JessopCommented Nov 24, 2022 at 10:36

9$\begingroup$ Worth noting that the Thugs (if they existed) killed strangers, not each other. The OP seems to be asking about a society where anyone can kill anyone else. $\endgroup$– Kef SchecterCommented Nov 24, 2022 at 13:10

$\begingroup$ +1 for that Portal reference; although OP seems to be asking about plain random killing and not killing for a reason the killer believes to be justified $\endgroup$– Josh PartCommented Nov 24, 2022 at 17:11

2$\begingroup$ Murdering slaves in the US was a capital offense in all slaveholding states going back 200 years. it was certainly not without consequence. It was generally illegal in most but not all slaveholding societies, but sometimes the punishment was more mild. $\endgroup$– ShamshielCommented Nov 25, 2022 at 2:37

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. science-based), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
