Throw a couple of human teenagers together and they'll work things out in most cases, this species, strictly according to the description, won't.

And maybe the aliens' children are more self-reliant than humans'. I agree that a long time between cause and effect could be problematic, but I rather imagine that the earliest humans ran into similar issues (mass poisoning, disease).
