Dust clouds are not dense enough to hide all nearby stars. We wouldn't have to wait for the far future, because stars can be "thrown out" of a galaxy just as planets can be expelled from a newly forming solar system. When the aliens invent telescopes to see their planetary neighbors one might look around the rest of the sky for fun and find a nearby galaxy. $\endgroup$ Commented Apr 28, 2019 at 19:29
