Again, the fundamental confusion here seems to be, not realizing that "1984" was, quite simply, ABOUT "the Soviet Union" - that was the whole point. (And, moreover, Huxley astutely realized that "we were just as bad and en route to the same place".) $\endgroup$

    $\begingroup$ @Fattie Huxely? Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World. 1984 was written by George Orwell. Both books posit a dystopian future and are often compared critically, so the confusion is understandable... $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ Same comment as on the other GDR answer: The Stasi was heavily reliant on (at the time) modern technology for its surveillance. So I’m not sure that how proves that it could be done without. $\endgroup$
