Mar 8, 2018 at 13:16 comment added Markus It reminds me of magic barrier in Gothic 1. A person can't go outside, but you can still transport goods out of it so trade is possible. I would recommend you to check Gothic lore to get some ideas.

Mar 7, 2018 at 14:47 comment added Simba You've given your scenario medieval tech with magic and steam-punk. Bear in mind that steam-punk implies steam, which in turn implies a tech level far in advance of medieval. You may want to let the magic deal with this discrepancy, but I thought I should raise it in case you hadn't considered that.
Mar 7, 2018 at 14:47 comment added Brythan I don't know about opinion-based, but I would close this as story-based. It's not up to us to explain why someone put a barrier there. If the poster first figures out who put the barrier there and why, we can then help describe how the barrier could achieve its goals. But as is, the question is asking for help with making the plot work, which is off-topic.

Mar 7, 2018 at 8:23 comment added Raditz_35 Ok clarify this: usually there is just no option for the player to go to another realm that will be added later while it isn't explicitly stated that nobody can go there. You want them separated completely during the events of the game with no possible way of travel? How long has this been the case then? Can this barrier influence your continent, e.g. a volcano that makes air travel impossible, or do you want something very localized? What about a plague and visiting is simply prohibited? This is still mainly brain storm. Maybe check out the sandbox in the meta

Mar 7, 2018 at 8:06 comment added Raditz_35 Many games do this via making the wall water or mountains. You could also have magical portals open with 2 worlds existing in different dimensions. I feel like this is just a brain storm question and not an attempt to solve an actual problem since there are so many obvious answers that are not excluded. This problem has already been solved again and again as well. Maybe you should at least explain why the usual approaches you are certainly familiar with do not work
Mar 7, 2018 at 8:04 comment added Morfium Can the continents be separated by water? Is it ok for the NPCs/Players to know they are in a VR world?
Mar 7, 2018 at 8:03 comment added Maiko Chikyu It can be obviously walled off as long as it has a certain explanation. I just don't want to go deus ex machina
Mar 7, 2018 at 8:03 comment added Matthew Ng does it have to look natural or can it just be very obviously walled off?
