Timeline for Contacted company asking if there's an iOS software engineering role, and they responded saying QA would be a perfect fit. How can I navigate this?

Jan 27, 2022 at 21:48 | comment | added | Yakk | There is engineer-in-test, which is someone who writes software to ensure quality of the product. An engineer-in-test for an iOS product will be doing some iOS programming. An engineer-in-test is "in QA", but doesn't "do QA", in that they are writing code to test the app, not testing the app. Much like someone writing dental scheduling software isn't a receptionist.

Jan 26, 2022 at 19:07 | comment | added | psmears | @lucidbrot: I'm sure there are - and they lose out too, since if they want their career to progress they have to move out of QA and into development :-/
Jan 26, 2022 at 18:45 | comment | added | lucidbrot | @psmears are there no good QA people that enjoy doing QA then? :P (regarding your parenthetical remark)
Jan 25, 2022 at 22:20 | comment | added | psmears | @BittermanAndy: That's true, but that's not how all places work: I've seen organisations where the best QA employees do get moved into development. (Naturally, their QA teams had a tendency to suck, since all the good people kept leaving...)
Jan 25, 2022 at 22:12 | comment | added | Curious | @PaulD.Waite Yes though perhaps not senior level experience since I've seen a senior iOS position from them in the past and it wasn't mentioned.

Jan 25, 2022 at 9:11 | comment | added | BittermanAndy | Something to consider re your last sentence: if you demonstrate excellent performance in QA, that's a reason to keep you in QA, not move you into engineering.
