Thank you for your message, the link to click on is broken. We are not using the Pro version we are trying to use the free version.

Based on that message you do have the Pro version, as in the Free there is no such message. And there the license doesn’t need to be activated either for plugin updates, as it is getting updated from the official plugin repository.

So if you are trying to use the Free version, then make sure the Pro does not exist on your website.

In this case, if the update is not working, what you could do is remove the plugin (don’t worry, your slider will stay), and install it from the plugin repository. However, if you are using an old version of the plugin, then between the latest version and the older versions, there are significant differences:
    https://smartslider.helpscoutdocs.com/article/2028-sliders-look-different-after-the-3-5-update
So what I would recommend is to first update/install on a staging site, so you can see if there were any big changes or not. And in the meantime you could fix the problems.

I am not sure what I am supposed to do to fix this. We have v 3.3.27 installed and it wants us to update to v 3.5.1.21 and it won’t do it automatically. When I try to activate in the plugin – I am getting a “User Registration is not currently allowed” error.

    Hi @tazcrzy

As Robert mentioned earlier, the problem is that you are using an unauthorized Pro version on your site. What you described above so far is exactly that needs to happen if you use Smart Slider 3 Pro without an activated license. So that already confirms that you are using the Pro version, but you can check this easily, if you go to:

    • WordPress > Plugins > Installed plugins

there you should choose the “Active” tab, so you will see only the active plugins, and search for “Smart Slider 3”. If you find a plugin that is called “Smart Slider 3 Pro”, then you are using the Pro version on your site but your license is not activated.

If this is the case, the please get in touch with us directly over the ticket system:

and we will give you more instructions there, since as Robert mentioned earlier, we are not allowed to discuss topics about commercial products ( such as Smart Slider 3 Pro ) on this forum, because of the forum guidelines:

This forum is only for the Free version.

    Best regards,
    Laszlo.

The version we are using came with the Theme that was purchased years ago. I just need to switch the free version, if that is possible. Thank you

    Hi @tazcrzy!

We don’t allow the Pro version of Smart Slider to be in themes, so in that case the theme did an unauthorized installation of our plugin.

If you would like to switch to the Free version, you can, but you should note that all Pro settings you used will be lost, and you won’t be able to recover them even if you turn back the Pro version. If this is fine for you, then go to your Plugins list, deactivate (and possibly delete) Smart Slider Pro, and then install Smart Slider Free:
    https://smartslider.helpscoutdocs.com/article/1717-wordpress-installation#free

And as Robert mentioned, some settings will require adjustments due to the big version difference, so you should think of this Pro -> Free replacement as possibly a fresh start with our plugin, where you might need to recreate your sliders.

In case you aren’t sure, that this is fine for you, I suggest creating a backup from your website first.
