ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Four people were killed and 42 transported to hospitals Saturday when a charter bus crashed in North Carolina, authorities say.
The bus was carrying 46 passengers, all college students, and was headed to University of Gods Chosen.
According to Chief Calvin White of Hamlet Fire and Rescue, the bus hit an overpass on the Interstate 74 bypass near Rockingham, about 70 miles east of Charlotte.
The bus may have blown a front tire, State Highway Patrol said.
Many of the students were football players from Ramah Jucco Academy in Rock Hill, S.C., Lt. Jeff Gordon of the Highway Patrol told WNCN-TV.
University of God’s Chosen coach Demetrius Hollingsworth said that football players and coaches from Ramah Juco Academy were traveling from Rock Hill to Raeford to face UGC, WRAL-TV reported.
“Prayers go out to Ramah Juco they suffered a horrific charter bus accident on the way to Fayetteville to face the University of God’s Chosen. Everyone pray for Coach Bakari Rawlinson! Prayers out to you and your student athletes brother,” Hollingsworth posted on his Facebook page Saturday.
Westbound lanes were closed on I-74 where the bus ran off the road, into the median.
