Update your Flash ads to HTML5 ads

Starting June 30, 2016, you’ll no longer be able to upload display ads built in Flash. And, starting in January 2017, AdWords will stop running display ads in the Flash format.

If you use Flash ads in your AdWords campaigns, there are 2 ways to switch to HTML5 ads:

What you can do

Example 1: You already have Flash ads uploaded to AdWords

If you already have Flash ads uploaded to AdWords, we highly recommend that you create new image ads instead. You can also create HTML5 ads with one of these free Google tools:

  • AdWords Ad gallery: Create an ad from existing HTML5 templates or get custom ad ideas based on your website's content and style.
  • Google Web Designer: Download this free HTML5 authoring tool to build ads for your Google Display Network campaigns.

Alternatively, you can upload HTML5 ads that you create on your own directly into AdWords. See AdWords HTML5 requirements. After you create your ads, you can use the AdWords HTML5 validator to check that they meet our requirements.

Remember to follow our best practices for building compelling display ads that can reach people across the browsers and devices they use.

If you have Flash ads that were previously uploaded to AdWords, they may have been updated to HTML5 automatically. Converted Flash ads show as “Flash and HTML5” in AdWords, and will continue to run.

Example 2: You created Flash ads in the AdWords Ad gallery

If you created Flash ads in the AdWords Ad gallery using any of the “General purpose” templates (except the “Automatic layout - classic design” template), we recommend that you create new image ads by using one of these methods:

  • Uploading a new image ad or an HTML5 ad
  • Creating a new template ad with AdWords "ad ideas."

Example 3: You have Flash ads running on third-party ad servers

Due to the nature of third-party ad serving, AdWords can't detect if your ad tag uses a Flash ad or not. If you don't have Flash ads running on your third-party ad server, you can ignore the alert in AdWords. If you have Flash ads running on third-party ad servers, such as DoubleClick Manager, you can either create a static image ad, or create an HTML5 ad on your own and upload it to your ad server of choice.

Create HTML5 ads with any of these free tools from Google:

Alternatively, you can upload HTML5 ads that you create on your own directly into AdWords.

Whatever tool you choose, remember to follow our best practices for building compelling display ads that can reach people across the browsers and devices they use.

Keep in mind

Ad servers must be certified to serve HTML5 ads on AdWords.
