New survey on CSS frameworks

CSS frameworks are important tools to facilitate front end development. We started monitoring the usage of a variety of 22 CSS frameworks.

One quarter of websites use one of the these frameworks. Bootstrap is by far the most popular one, used by 19.8% of the web, followed by Animate and Foundation.

Many sites use more than one CSS framework. Bootstrap and Animate are a popular complementary combination. 28% of the sites that use Bootstrap, also use Animate.

Popular sites are less likely to use a CSS framework. Usage among the top 1000 sites is just over 10%, and a little over 20% among the top 100k sites. There are no huge, but still significant regional differences: CSS frameworks are more popular in India and Turkey (more than 40% of the websites there), and less popular in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Japan (only around 15%).

Some content management systems such as Shopify, Wix and Squarespace typically don't use a CSS framework. Others, like WordPress and Drupal pretty much duplicate the general trend of CSS framework usage.

Ant Design is the CSS framework with the highest share of high traffic sites in its user base, followed by Picnic and Materialize.
