Image format surveysSummary: A new survey covers the usage of various image file formats on the web.
What would the web be without images? Webmasters have the choice of various image file formats, and their preferences are shown in our newest survey.
The three most common image formats are JPEG (best suited for photographs), GIF (suitable for graphics, logos and simple animations) and PNG (a more modern format, originally introduced as a free, open-source successor of GIF).
These three formats dominate this survey, and we were actually surprised that other formats are used at all by a significant number of sites. The other formats are BMP (a format that is typically used for uncompressed images), ICO (a common format for favicons, but in this survey we count only the usage as images on web pages) and TIFF (typically used either uncompressed or with a lossless compression).
As always, we hope you find this expansion of our web technology coverage useful.
