Animal Planet exec Charlie Foley will lead Discovery Communication’s newly forged Original Content Group and create content across the company’s portfolio of cable nets.
Foley is tasked with creating, writing and exec producing scripted and unscripted projects and formats, as well as overseeing a team within the Original Content Group that will produce content for Discovery Networks both Stateside and internationally.
He will be based in Discovery’s Gotham offices and report to Marjorie Kaplan, group prez and g.m. of Animal Planet, Science Channel and Velocity.
“Charlie’s creative talents have helped transform Animal Planet into a top 20 network with original series like ‘River Monsters,’ ‘Whale Wars‘ and the network’s two scripted ‘Mermaids’ specials, which have become a global phenomenon,” Kaplan said. “With him in this new role, the entire Discovery portfolio will be able to benefit from Charlie’s big ideas, his creative leadership and his storytelling skills.”
