Tribeca Film Institute, the year-round nonprofit affiliated with the Tribeca Film Festival, has named the recipients of the Tribeca All Access awards, with two Creative Promise winners, a special jury mention and a pool of grantees receiving a total of some $90,000 in coin.
The Creative Promise kudos, winners of which were selected from the 11 titles participating this year in the TAA program, went to brewing narrative feature “The Lobbyists,” Terence Nance’s tale of a con and a former CIA agent who blackmail politicos into voting for progressive legislation, and to Lyric R. Cabral and David F. Sutcliffe’s “T(Error),” a doc about the aftermath of an FBI counterterrorism sting gone awry. Each project will take home $10,000 to help hit completion, with the coin coming in addition to the $15,000 each TAA title already scored when selected for the program.

The fest also announced the winner of the first TFI Sloan prize in support of a project that advances public understanding of science. “Newton’s Laws of Emotion” won a $10,000 cash prize and will also receive mentorship from science experts and film bizzers.

A special jury mention for the Creative Promise award went to “Time is Illmatic,” a doc from director-producer One9 about rapper NAS and his father Ola Dara, a blues musician.
At the TAA kudo ceremony at Gotham restaurant Megu April 24, grants were also awarded to TAA alumni for developing docu titles (Dawn Valadez’s “Turn It Around,” Eric Juhola’s untitled Colorado film) and narratives (Hossein Keshavarz’s “A Pebble of Love in the Shoe of My Life,” Paola Mendoza’s untitled Colombia-set story), as well as a couple of other alumni projects receiving “on-track” grants.
Annual TAA Adrienne Shelly Foundation grant for a female filmmaker went to Afia Nathaniel for her developing film “Dukhtar.” Grants were also handed out to aid in marketing and web support as well as to fund visuals for a couple of project pitches.
The 2013 Tribeca Film Festival runs through April 28.
