J Blakeson is in talks to direct Sony‘s sci-fi pic “The Fifth Wave,” which Graham King and Tobey Maguire are producing.

Based on the Rick Yancey novel of the same name, the film follows a girl searching for her brother after an alien invasion. Susannah Grant is penning the script.

King and his producing partner Tim Headington along with Denis O’Sullivan will produce through GK Films, with Maguire producing through his Material Pictures with Matt Plouffe.

Andrea Giannetti and Hannah Minghella are overseeing the project for Columbia Pictures.

Given the popularity of the book and fans already asking for a sequel, Sony is hoping this pic can turn into a future franchise for the studio.

The CAA-repped Blakeson gained notoriety with his 2009 cult hit “The Disappearance Of Alice Creed” and is looking for his follow-up. Blakeson has been attached to handful of films since “Creed,” including Fox’s “Wool” and MRC’s “Bad Blood and Trouble.”
