By 2025, Asia alone is predicted to account for US$0.93 trillion of uninsured risks as the global protection gap continues to trend upwards. Parametric #insurance can offer a quick alternative or complement the traditional insurance products in reducing risk exposure by covering areas not insured by traditional insurance. It helps to minimise losses from climate-related disasters which #Asia is particularly vulnerable to as the region remains the fastest-warming region as the world heats up, with temperatures rising more rapidly than the global average. Speaking to Eco-Business, Christopher Au says, "This allows for a fast payment following the insured event for immediate recovery, whilst the full amount of damage can be assessed subsequently." As UK communities navigate increasing #climate challenges like flooding and heat, some are also leading the way towards a more sustainable, resilient and equitable world. Ahead of London Climate Action Week, some of our GB colleagues explored Poplar, a neighbourhood near WTW's London Lime Street office, on a sustainability-themed walking tour. We visited innovative sites like R-Urban, a disused car park now transformed into an eco-civic hub with garden beds, a mushroom farm, and an anaerobic digester. Another stop was Poplar Works, where a once underutilised garage now serves as fashion studios offering workshops and training for local residents and small businesses. Special thanks to our hosts Alex Jeremy and Daniel Lynch from Poplar HARCA, and Bethan Mobey at Wen (Women's Environmental Network) for sharing an overview of the Just FACT (Food and Climate Transition) partnership! Severe convective storms (SCS) made a sizable impact on the (re)insurance industry in 2023, causing more than $50 billion in claims for the U.S. alone, accounting for more than half of all global insured losses. https://ow.ly/oqO550Spo8Q During the past few decades, SCS-related losses have steadily increased largely due to exposure growth. But how have the frequency and severity of SCS themselves changed during that period. Until now, it has been difficult to answer these questions because of the intrinsic nature of SCS hazards and the way we have recorded their occurrence but new research by Michael Tippett and Kelsey Malloy, PhD of WTW Research Network's long standing partners Columbia University have leveraged what we know about broad-scale atmospheric conditions to uncover previously unknown trends in one of the most important kinds of SCS hazards: tornado ‘outbreaks’. #WTWResearchNetwork #SCS #SevereConvectiveStorm #Tornado #NaturalCatastrophe #NatCat #RiskManagement
