The Purpose

The MU Foundation operates the Foundation and YDP phases of the Manchester United Girls Academy which has the vision of creating the most successful talent development programme within girl’s football by revolutionising the way the game is learnt and played. This role sits in the medical team and assists in delivering physiotherapy services to players.

The main responsibility is to work within a multi-disciplinary Medical and Physical Performance team to assist in delivering physiotherapy services to girls at Manchester United’s Girls Academy (U11s to U15s) to support the physical welfare of all players

The Role


  • Assessment and Treatment: Provide thorough assessment, treatment, and functional rehabilitation for injured players, ensuring their safe return to play.
  • Clinical Decision-Making: Make informed decisions regarding the fitness of players to participate in training sessions or matches.
  • Player Education: Educate players on injury prevention strategies to optimise their performance and reduce the risk of injuries.
  • Communication: Effectively communicate injury status and rehabilitation progress to coaching staff and parents, maintaining clear and timely updates.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and secure records of all assessments, treatments, and rehabilitation plans in accordance with professional standards (PMA).
  • Professional Conduct: Adhere to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy's Rules of Professional Conduct and uphold Manchester United's code of conduct in all activities.
  • Stakeholder Management: Develop and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders, including Manchester United Women and The FA, to support the academy's goals.
  • Continuous Learning: Attend and actively participate in meetings, seminars, workshops, and networking events to stay updated with industry trends and contribute to program development.
  • Personal Development: Undertake continuous personal development as required by the club to enhance professional skills and knowledge.
  • Commitment to Safeguarding: Uphold and promote the Foundation's Safeguarding policy, collaborating closely with Manchester United FC's Safeguarding team and partners to ensure a safe environment for all participants.
  • Availability: Be present at training sessions and attend matches, both home and away, as necessary to provide immediate medical support.
  • Data Collection: Collect relevant data, information, and evidence of best practices to support funding requirements and demonstrate the academy's impact.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Implement and maintain Emergency Action Plans to ensure a safe and healthy working environment aligned with Manchester United Football Club's policies.

  • Safeguarding Knowledge: Understanding of best practices and legislation in safeguarding.
  • Physiotherapy Experience: Experience in supporting young people with sporting injuries in a physio capacity.
  • Understanding of child development
  • Understanding of child protection issues and protocols.
  • Musculoskeletal Understanding: Familiarity with youth player musculoskeletal development.
  • Organisational and Communication Skills: Strong in written, verbal, and listening communication, with excellent organizational abilities.
  • Relationship Building: Ability to build trusting relationships with both children and parents, demonstrating empathy.
  • Team Player: Can enthuse and effectively communicate with children, young people, and adults.
  • Self-Motivated: Driven individual who adds energy and vitality to team dynamics.


Qualifications:


  • Current Physiotherapy Degree.


Desirable:


  • FA Learning Safeguarding Children certificate.
  • Minimum FA Intermediate First Aid for Sport Certificate.
  • Any other relevant qualifications or courses.
  • Full UK driving license.
  • Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and Health Care Professions Council.
