NEWS: New research published today by Amadeus finds hoteliers expect to increase their investment in technology by an average of 16% over the coming 12 months, with one in five planning to invest over 20% more than they did last year. The findings are the result of a survey of global senior hospitality leaders representing a diverse range of properties and management groups. 😩 Overtourism vs destination stewardship 🌤️ The case of overtourism presents a unique opportunity for a paradigm shift. There is a critical need to move from a model which measures success purely by visitor numbers / dollars spent ➡️ a model that also takes into consideration the well-being of residents, and the impact on the environment. As an industry, we need to learn how to measure the carrying capacity of a place, get more creative with how we disperse tourists (think off-the-beaten path itineraries or changing the narratives on ‘off’ seasons), before we love all our favourite places to death. ☠️ Tourist destinations need to be created in harmony with community needs, adopting a destination stewardship approach that seeks to maintain a happy community, whose natural and cultural assets remain protected, sustaining longer-term tourism that comfortably supports rather than exploits a destination. 🌿 https://lnkd.in/e-H4bN5x

Unpopular Opinion Alert! 📢 #Overtourism More and more destinations are feeling the pressures of overtourism, a challenge now confronting #Tenerife in the Canary Islands, a gem I had the pleasure of visiting last summer. As these spots experience surging visitor numbers, many are contemplating measures like tourism taxes to manage growth sustainably. While I understand the importance of scaling tourism responsibly, it’s crucial that the benefits of this growth extend directly to the local communities. Rather than funneling all tourism tax revenue into infrastructure and capital projects, why not distribute a portion directly to the residents? This approach not only fosters a healthier relationship between tourists and locals but also gives community members a tangible stake in the #tourism economy. Consider Alaska's model, where residents receive annual dividends from oil revenues. Why shouldn't tourism-heavy regions adopt a similar strategy? Sharing the wealth could transform overtourism from a burden into an opportunity for all. "Firstly, there’s the resurgence of high-potential #markets, supported by the near-complete reestablishment of connections with our country since 2019, although there’s still room for improvement in terms of the number of #travellers. I’m referring, for instance, to the initiatives we’ve undertaken in #Brazil within the B2B sphere, encompassing leisure and specifically focusing on #luxurytravel. We’ve also been actively involved with #Mexico, which boasts a direct connection with #Rome through a daily flight that will soon double, further enhancing the significance of this market. "We’ll be making our presence felt in #Singapore at luxury-related events, and shortly, we’ll be returning to #China, #Japan, #SouthKorea, and #India to partake in specific workshops. We always strive to maximise opportunities for operators, especially in relevant contexts, to highlight e the most significant investments. These markets are gaining momentum again, and I believe it’s crucial to seize these opportunities by carefully examining the potential development data. Last week, I returned from staying at a wonderful Hilton Hotels & Resorts in Malta, and I was really impressed by their sustainability efforts. They actively encouraged guests to reduce food waste and adopt eco-friendly habits during their stay. From clear and compelling messaging about minimising food waste (see poster below) to providing drinking water taps in each room for refilling bottles instead of using plastic - it was amazing to see these initiatives in action every day! These efforts resonated with me because they align perfectly with what we do at IndiCater. We are dedicated to helping food and beverage businesses reduce their food waste, understand their carbon emissions, and operate more sustainably and cost-effectively.
